Why study fine arts?
For the student who wishes to study a specific instrument, the music program offers piano, vocal, instrumental, and guitar private instruction as well as the performance ensembles which include "Westminster Chamber Singers", "Forever Famous Singers" show choir, "Sublime Harmony" the male vocal ensemble, and the Blue Jay Jazz Band. All performance courses are taken for credit and may be taken as many semesters as is desired by the student.
The performance ensembles perform throughout the year for a variety of school, local, and statewide events. Students who audition will also have to opportunity to participate in national collegiate choirs.
Westminster Chamber Singers: This is the largest of the vocal performance ensembles and consists of between 40-60 singers. This group is open to any student who enjoys singing and the large choral performance experience. The ensemble performs a variety of repertoire ranging from gospel to classical and performs for Commencement, Holiday events, and President's Dinner.
Forever Famous Singers: This show choir is the premiere group on the Westminster campus and is an audition-only ensemble. This group is a choreographed traveling troupe that performs for a variety of campus, local, and statewide events and performs everything from Broadway to hip-hop.
Sublime Harmony: This male performing ensemble is an audition-only group of between 8-12 members and performs for all types of activities on and off campus. This group performs music ranging from pop to classic barbershop.
Blue Jay Jazz Band: This instrumental ensemble is quite popular and is open to any student who has an intermediate to advanced knowledge of band. Participation in this ensemble does not require an audition, but some band or orchestra experience is a necessary requirement. This group performs for on-campus activities and performs jazz to pop repertoire.
The performance opportunities offered by the Westminster Fine Arts program allow for the individual performer to improve their technical facility, proficiency, and musical maturity in an environment conducive to the budding musician and performer.
Westminster offers an excellent teacher:student ratio and individual instruction which is definitely key to the enjoyment of the musical experience. The close-knit campus community and fine arts teamwork offers strong support and encouragement, which makes the fine arts experience one of excitement and creativity.
Westminster Fine Arts program also includes a very diverse offering of art classes including Photography, Art History, and Foundations of Art. The Art Club is a very popular club on campus and participates in many campus activities including building sets for the music concerts and exhibiting student work in the Champ gallery area. The photography and art exhibits are rotated on a regular basis and allow students to show their exemplary work to the campus and local community. The Art program is growing and the faculty is looking forward to possibly including drawing and painting in the upcoming semesters.
