Head Coach Dennis Hughes

Dennis Hughes joined the Westminster College athletic staff as head baseball coach in the fall of 2011. He guided the team to the conference tournament in his first season.

A former Jefferson City Helias High School administrator, coach and teacher, Hughes joined the Blue Jay staff with extensive experience. Hughes guided the Crusader baseball team to a 137-38 record in eight seasons as head coach and guided the team to state titles in 1987, 1988 and 1989. His teams compiled a Missouri state record 55-game winning streak and earned a #25 national ranking in the USA Today High School poll. He concluded his high school career as an administrator.

In his second season, and first full year at Westminster Coach Denny Hughes was named SLIAC Coach of the Year.  He guided the Blue Jays to a 23-11 overall record, including a 17-6 conference record.  The 17 conference wins, trail only the 2001 Blue Jays (18) for most in a single season.  During the 2013 campaign, Hughes helped guide Westminster to a .322 batting average.  The Blue Jays' average was the highest since 2003 and put them in the top 20 nationally for team batting average.  The pitching staff also made their mark by lowering their team ERA to 3.78, which was the second lowest in school history.  The Blue Jays also set the school record with a .956 fielding percentage and had two players named to the All-Central Region Team.

In 2014 Hughes lead Westminster to their first back-to-back 20 win seasons since 2000-2001.  The pitching staff was able to make their mark on the Westminster record books.  The team struck out 265 batters in just 35 games, besting the 1999 team that struck out 214 in 40 games.  Westminster had two players named to All-Region teams, and the first ABCA All-American in Westminster history.  The Blue Jays also got it done in the classroom by posting a 3.35 team GPA for the 2013-2014 school year.

Hughes and his wife, Carole, live in Jefferson City. They have three sons, Dane, Danton, and Deion.
