Seven Westminster Student-Athletes Get Academic Nod
Fulton, Mo. – Seven student-athletes from Westminster College have earned academic all-conference by the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The honor winners represent the spring sports of baseball, softball, men’s tennis and women’s tennis.

Four Westminster Baseball Players Recognized By SLIAC
Four Westminster College baseball players have earned all-conference recognition as voted on by the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference coaches.
Matt Mallette, a freshman outfielder from St. Louis, Missouri (St. Mary’s High School), was a first team selection. Mallette led the team with a .380 batting average and a .685 slugging percentage. He was named SLIAC Hitter of the Week for April 5-11.
Three players were honorable mention picks, including: Jacob Beasley, Sr., Designated Hitter, Centralia, Missouri (Centralia); Jim Gesling, Sr., Utility Player, Centralia, Missouri (Centralia); and Monte Gibbs, Jr., Short Stop, Ballwin, Missouri (Kennedy).

Twin Bill Split Ends Westminster Season And Tourney Hopes
The Westminster College baseball team tripped in the final sprint to the finish line in its hunt for a berth in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball tournament, splitting its final doubleheader with Eureka College Tuesday in Greenville, Illinois. The Blue Jays (13-22, 11-13 SLIAC), who needed two wins to grab the fourth and final seed in the conference tournament, won the first game 12-3 but lost the second game 8-2. With the split Eureka (19-19, 13-11 SLIAC) earns the fourth and final seed for the four-team conference tournament which begins Thursday.
The Blue Jays took the early 6-1 lead in the opener and put the game away with a six-run fifth inning to prevail 12-3. Three players recorded two hits each with junior VJ Reynolds going 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Junior Monte Gibbs went 2-for-4 with three RBI and sophomore Evan White went 2-for-4. Sophomore Nick Hoag went 1-for-2 with two RBI, two walks and two runs scored. Freshman Mike Brotherton (2-4) picked up the win, allowing three runs and two earned runs over six innings on the mound. Freshman Tyler Ten Eyck pitched an inning of shut out relief.
Westminster could not duplicate that magic in the nightcap, falling to Eureka 8-2 to close out the season. The Blue Jays fell behind 3-0 early and did not score until the final inning. Westminster recorded just four hits with White going 2-for-3. Freshman Matt Mallette went 2-for-3 and drove home Westminster’s two runs in the seventh inning with his sixth home run of the season. Senior Cody Blount (5-3) took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits over five innings in his final collegiate appearance.

Monday SLIAC Doubleheader Postponed, Now Set For Tuesday
The rain and bad weather has caused the postponement of Monday’s St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader between Westminster College and Eureka College. The games are now scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at Greenville College in Greenville, Illinois.
The two games have conference tournament implications. Westminster needs two wins to secure the fourth and final seed in the tournament, while Eureka needs one win to secure the fourth seed and two wins to secure the third seed.
Blue Jays Top League Champ Webster To Stay Alive
The Westminster College baseball team topped St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference league champion Webster University 13-7 to stay alive in the hunt for a conference tournament berth. The Blue Jays meet Eureka College at 1:00 p.m. Monday at Maryville University in St. Louis and need two wins to grab the fourth and final seed in the SLIAC tournament. Eureka earns the fourth seed with one win, while Webster, Greenville College and Fontbonne University have already qualified.
Westminster (12-21, 10-12 SLIAC) scored four unearned runs in the first inning to grab the early lead against Webster and scored in five of eight innings at-bat. The Blue Jays scored five runs in the seventh inning to grab a 13-4 lead. Freshman Matt Mallette went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, and junior Monte Gibbs went 2-for-2 with four RBI and two runs scored. Junior Mark Davidson (4-2) allowed four runs on four hits and six walks over five innings to get the win, and senior Curt Byrd allowed three runs on three hits over four innings to get the save. Webster (30-9, 21-3 SLIAC) hit four home runs among its seven hits, but committed five errors.

Westminster Still In The Hunt For SLIAC Tournament
With a 17-6 win over MacMurray College Friday in Jacksonville, Illinois, the Westminster College baseball team remained in contention for a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament berth. But, the Blue Jays (11-21, 9-12 SLIAC) are hanging on by a string. They need a home win over league champion Webster University Sunday to stay alive.
Westminster took advantage of eight walks and five hit batsmen to capture Friday's 17-6 win over MacMurray (2-32, 1-23 SLIAC). Senior Jason Grose went 2-for-2 with two RBI and junior VJ Reynolds went 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the offense. Senior Austin Pogue (1-2) picked up the win with relief from three pitchers.

Blue Jay Baseball Keeps SLIAC Tournament Hopes Alive
The Westminster College baseball squad remained in mathematical contention for a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament berth by splitting a conference doubleheader with Spalding University Sunday in Fulton. Spalding (14-17, 8-8 SLIAC) won the first game 4-2, but Westminster (10-21, 8-12) took the second game 10-2 to win the series 2-1.
In the 4-2 opening game loss, Westminster managed just two hits with junior Monte Gibbs and senior Jim Gesling each recording singles. Spalding scored four runs on eight hits against two Blue Jays pitchers with senior Curt Byrd (0-2) taking the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits.
After falling behind 2-0 in the nightcap, the Westminster offense came alive. The Blue Jays, who collected 15 hits in the 10-2 win, took the lead to stay with a three-run third inning, highlighted by sophomore Mike Young's second home run of the season. Westminster put the game away, scoring six runs on six hits and an error in the fifth inning. Young went 4-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored, senior Jacob Beasley went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, and sophomore Greg finger went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Senior Cody Blount (5-2) pitched all seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with three walks and five strike outs.
SLIAC Tournament Note: Westminster, Eureka College and Principia College are in a battle for the fourth and final berth in the conference tournament. Eureka has control of its destiny while Principia and Westminster are on the outside looking in.

Blue Jays Record Just Three Hits In Two Road Losses
Westminster College recorded just three hits in two games, dropping both ends of a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader to league-leading Webster University Thursday at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois.
Sophomores Nick Genetti and Nick Hogue each recorded hits in a 7-5 loss for Westminster in the opener. Blue Jay sophomore Brandon Zucker (1-2) took the loss. In the nightcap, freshman Matt Mallette recorded the lone hit with a double in the fifth inning for the Blue Jays (8-20, 6-11 SLIAC). Senior Austin Pogue (0-2) took the complete-game loss against defending league champion Webster (28-7, 19-1 SLIAC).
Westminster Baseball Drops Rescheduled Game, 8-7
The Westminster College baseball squad saw its current losing streak reach seven games with an 8-7 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss to Eureka College Wednesday in Eureka, Illinois. The game was one of three games postponed because of rain this past weekend.
The Blue Jays (8-18, 6-9 SLIAC) rallied from a 6-4 deficit to lead 7-6 in the top of the seventh inning, but Eureka (16-18, 10-10 SLIAC) scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to secure the win. Junior VJ Reynolds paced Westminster offensively, hitting a pair of two-run homers to finish 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored, and junior Monte Gibbs went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Senior Mike Oliveri (0-4) was the fourth Westminster pitcher and took the loss in relief.
One Westminster College Baseball Game Rescheduled
Heavy rain in Missouri forced the postponement of the three-game St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball series between Westminster College and Eureka College, scheduled for this past weekend on Saucier Field in Fulton. The nine-inning game has been reescheduled for 3:30 Wednesday in Eureka, Illinois.
The three-game SLIAC series between the Blue Jays and Red Devils has conference tournament implications. Westminster (8-18, 6-8 SLIAC) and Eureka (13-18, 7-10 SLIAC) are still in mathematical contention for a berth in the conference tournament, which will be played in the middle of May.
Blue Jay Baseball Squad Outscored 8-6 In St. Louis
The Westminster College Blue Jay baseball team fell to 8-17 overall and 6-8 in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with an 8-6 loss to Fontbonne University Wednesday in St. Louis. The Blue Jays dropped all three-games in the season series to Fontbonne (15-15, 11-7 SLIAC).
Junior Grady Lincalis went 3-for-5 and senior Jacob Beasley went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Senior Mike Oliveri (0-3) took the loss in relief.

The Westminster College baseball squad completed a three-game sweep of its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series over Blackburn College with a 13-7 victory Sunday in Carlinville, Illinois.
Senior Jason Grose went 2-for-4 with four RBI and junior Monte Gibbs went 3-for-4 with four runs scored, and junior VJ Reynolds hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season and scored three times for the Blue Jays (8-11, 6-2 SLIAC). Senior Cody Blunt (4-1) picked up the win, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits over six innings. He recorded eight strike outs against Blackburn (5-17, 2-8 SLIAC).
Westminster, which has won three in a row and five of its last six games, took both ends of Saturday's doubleheader by the scores of 19-3 and 5-2.

Blue Jays Score 43 Runs In SLIAC Doubleheader Sweep
After being rained out on Saturday and Sunday, the Westminster College baseball squad responded in a big way, scoring 43 runs on 35 hits in a 27-8, 16-4 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of MacMurray College Monday in Fulton.
The Blue Jays (5-10, 3-1 SLIAC) used 19 hits and 11 walks in winning the opener 27-8. Sophomore Mike Young went 5-for-6 with a home run and eight RBI, senior Jacob Beasley went 4-for-6 with two home runs, three RBI and three runs scored, and freshman Matt Mallette and junior VJ Reynolds each added a home run. Senior Cody Blount (3-1) got the win, allowing seven runs (three earned) on five hits with five walks and seven strike outs over six innings. Junior Jon Simpher allowed one run on one hit in one inning of relief.
Westminster tallied 16 runs on 16 hits in winning the nightcap 16-4 over MacMurray (1-13, 0-5 SLIAC). Senior Jim Gesling went 4-for-4 with a home run and four RBI, and junior Monte Gibbs went 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore Brandon Zucker (1-1) allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits with seven strike outs in six innings. Freshman Kevin Moritz allowed one hit and struck out two in an inning of relief.

The Blue Jays (3-10, 1-1 SLIAC) hit four home runs in winning the first game 12-4. Junior VJ Reynolds went 3-for-3 with a home run and junior Andrew Jett went 2-for-2 with a homer. Sophomore Mark Davidson (1-1) picked up the win, allowing four runs on eight hits over five innings.
Westminster lost 7-4 in the nightcap to Principia (4-11, 1-4 SLIAC). Sophomore Mike Young went 2-for-3 at the plate, while freshman Mike Brotherton (0-3) took the loss on the mound.

Westminster College (2-9) went 1-1 against Robert Morris College-Springfield Saturday in Springfield, Illinois. The Blue Jays won the opener 8-5 and dropped the nightcap 3-0.
Senior Cody Blount (2-1) picked up the win in the 8-5 opening game win, allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits with four strike outs over five innings. Sophomore Clint Gesling allowed one run over two innings to earn the save. Sophomore Nick Genetti went 2-for-4, senior Jacob Beasley went 2-for-4 with two RBI and senior Jim Gesling went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Westminster was shut out 3-0 in the day's finale. Sophomore Evan went 2-for-3 and sophomore Brandon Zucker (0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits over six innings.

Westminster College Baseball Schedule Adjusted
Last weekend’s weather has caused changes in the Westminster College baseball schedule. Wednesday’s home doubleheader with William Penn University has been cancelled because William Penn needs the date to fulfill a conference obligation. The Blue Jays have added a single game against Lincoln University which begins at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday in Jefferson City.

Westminster Baseball and Softball Teams Picked Fourth
Both the Westminster College baseball and softball squads have been picked fourth in their respective pre-season polls, as voted on by the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference coaches. The Blue Jay baseball squad finished 8-27 overall and eighth in the league standings at 6-17 last year. The 2009 Blue Jay softball squad went 12-22 overall, placed fourth in the league standings at 8-6, and qualified for the conference tournament.

Blue Baseball Snaps Streak And Gets First Win
Westminster College snapped a four-game losing streak with a 7-6 win over Grinnell in the first of two games played Sunday in Fulton.
Sophomore Evan White went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, and juniors Andrew Jett, VJ Reynolds and Monte Gibbs each recorded two hits against Grinnell. Senior Cody Blount (1-1) picked up the win, working two innings of relief. In the final game of the day, the Blue Jays (1-5) got two hits each from sophomore Nick Genetti and Gibbs in a 6-1 loss to Central College of Iowa. Freshman Mike Brotherton (0-1) took the loss in his first collegiate appearance.
Westminster Drops Season-Opening Doubleheader
The Westminster College Blue Jay baseball squad lost to Washington University 5-2 and 5-4 in non-conference action to open the 2010 season Wednesday in St. Louis.
In the first game, Westminster fell behind 4-0 before scoring single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Senior Cody Blount took the loss, giving up four runs (two earned) on seven hits over five innings, while sophomore Clint Gesling surrendered one run on three walks and a hits batsman in one inning of relief.
The Blue Jays led 1-0 after five and one/half innings of the nightcap on junior Andrew Jett’s first home run of the season in the fourth inning. Washington University (5-1) took a 4-1 lead in the sixth inning, but Westminster scored three runs on four hits to tie the score in the top of the seventh. Washington U. used a walk and two errors to score the winning run with no outs in the home half of the seventh inning. Sophomore Mike Young went 2-for-3 and sophomore Nick Genetti drove in two runs for the Blue Jays. Sophomore starter Mark Davidson allowed two runs on three hits and two walks over five innings, and senior Mike Oliveri took the loss in relief, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk in one inning of work.

Westminster College (Mo.) Baseball Team Fundraising Champ
The Westminster College baseball team raised $228.95 to take top honors in the September Westminster/United Way Coin Drive. The team wins a pizza party and advertising during the upcoming United Way Radiothon for its efforts.
During the September Coin Drive, a total of $355.01 was raised with all the proceeds going to the Callaway County United Way, which funds 13 agencies throughout the county.
