Westminster Softball Drops Pair To Ranked OpponentThe Westminster College Blue Jay softball squad fell 12-1 and 16-0 in non-conference action to #20 ranked Coe College Friday in Fulton. With the loss Westminster falls to 4-5 while Coe improves to 8-3.

The Westminster College softball squad rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning of the second game to defeat Saint Mary University (Kan.) 8-7 and earn a split of a non-conference doubleheader Monday in Fulton.
The Blue Jays (4-3) managed just three hits in dropping the opening game 9-0. In the nightcap, Westminster jumped on top 4-0 in the first inning, fell behind 5-4 in the top of the fourth before regaining the lead 6-5 in the bottom of the fourth. Saint Mary (1-1) tied the score 6-6 in the sixth inning and went up 7-6 in the top of the eighth. Westminster scored an unearned run to knot the score 7-7 and freshman Riley Zull singled in freshman Kenna Cornelson with the game winner. Junior Ashley Belfield (3-2), who picked up the pitching win in relief, went 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored. Senior Emily Masso and junior Brittany Moreno each recorded two hits and Cornelson drove in three runs.
Westminster Wins Opener 11-5, Nightcap Cancelled
The Westminster College softball squad pounded out 14 hits in an 11-5 victory over Stephens College Wednesday in Fulton. The games were originally scheduled for Columbia, but were moved to Fulton because of field conditions. Ironically, the second game of the doubleheader was cancelled in the third inning because of lighting and rain.
The Blue Jays (3-2) jumped on top 2-0 in the third inning, but fell behind 4-2 in the fourth inning. After regaining the lead with three runs in the fifth inning, Westminster added six runs in the late innings for the win. Senior Morgan Campbell went 3-for-4, and freshman Morgan Shipley went 2-for-4 with four RBI. Senior Michelle Mayhall went 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Junior Ashley Belfield (2-1) got the win, allowing four runs on four hits with four strike outs over six innings. Sophomore Molly Mendenhall allowed one unearned run in one inning of work against the Stars (0-3).
Westminster Baseball and Softball Teams Picked Fourth
Both the Westminster College baseball and softball squads have been picked fourth in their respective pre-season polls, as voted on by the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference coaches. The Blue Jay baseball squad finished 8-27 overall and eighth in the league standings at 6-17 last year. The 2009 Blue Jay softball squad went 12-22 overall, placed fourth in the league standings at 8-6, and qualified for the conference tournament.

Westminster Softball Goes 2-2 In Arkansas
After splitting a pair of games Saturday, the Westminster College softball squad split a pair of games Sunday to finish 2-2 in the season-opening Warrior Classic at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas.
On Saturday the Blue Jays fell to the University of Dallas 10-6 to open the season, but came back to down Blackburn College 12-4. In Sunday’s first game, Westminster topped MacMurray College 11-10 behind the 3-for-5 and four RBI performance of junior Brittany Moreno. Sophomore Molly Mendenhall picked up the win on the mound and senior Michelle Mayhall recorded the save in relief. Host Hendrix topped the Blue Jays 9-1 in the finale. Freshman Morgan Shipley went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored the lone run. Junior Ashley Belfield (1-1), who got a complete game win in Saturday’s win over Blackburn, took the loss.
2009-10 Blue Jay Softball Bits:
* The Blue Jays down Blackburn 12-4 to give Head Coach Shelli Manson her first career coaching win.
* Westminster is scheduled to open the 2010 schedule this Friday and Saturday, March 6 & 7, at the Hendrix Tournament in Conway, Ark.
* The preliminary 2010 softball schedule has been released and is available on the web (click link at left).
* Westminster went 1-1-1 at the Reverse Exposure Tournament on Sunday, September 27, in St. Louis.
* The Blue Jay softball team is running a concession stand at University of Missouri football games as a fundraiser for the 2009-10 season.
* 2009 fall softball practice has begun under the direction of first-year head coach Shelli Manson.
Manson Named Westminster College (Mo.) Softball Coach
Fulton, Mo. – Shelli Manson has been named head softball coach at Westminster College. Manson is scheduled to begin Monday, August 24.
Manson has been an assistant coach at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana, for the past three years. Prior to that, she served as a graduate assistant at Defiance College in Defiance, Ohio, from 2004-06 while completing her graduate degree in sports science. Manson received her Bachelors of Arts degree in history from Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio, in 2003. While in college, Manson was a four-year varsity starter and played on three teams that were NCAA Division III regional runners-up in 1999, 2000 and 2002. Her 2001 Muskingum team won the NCAA Division III national championship.
Manson replaces Nicole Stacey, who left Westminster after three years to assume the head softball coaching position at Lincoln University last month.
