His extensive background in employee benefits spans sales, services, operations and his areas of expertise include insurance carrier and broker management, carrier relations, industry affairs, media communications, government lobbying, mergers and acquisitions, due diligence, wellness, health insurance consulting, COBRA, HIPPA, pension and sales management.
During his career, Mr. Mangan has held a variety of executive leadership roles including President of HUB International's employee benefits division; President & Chief Executive Officer of Corporate Synergies Group; and Regional President of the New England Region of USI Insurance Services. He is a Board Member of the Council of Insurance Agents and Brokers, as well as Chairman of its Industry Affairs Committee. We asked Mr. Mangan about his educational experience at Westminster and how it affected his professional career.
What is it about Westminster that sets it apart from other schools in your opinion?
Being a Liberal Arts school, Westminster provides a truly sound, holistic education. At many State Universities, a student could conceivably graduate without ever writing a paper. I realized the value of Westminster’s holistic approach when I was earning my MBA. My professor stood in front of 400 students and stated that only three had the ability to write a coherent paper after we submitted our first assignment. Happily, I was one of those three students.
How did Westminster help you achieve your success as a leader?
I believe Westminster offers a unique opportunity to develop leadership skills. There are so few academic institutions where someone like me could hold five fraternity offices, become the Vice Chairman of the Interfraternity Council, the Social Chairman of the Student Government Association (SGA) and finally become the SGA’s Secretary. Westminster enabled me to do all of that while I also received an outstanding education.
Due to Westminster’s relatively small population, I quickly learned an invaluable lesson: you can’t just talk the talk to become a leader. You also have to walk the walk. You must lead by personal example. This is an absolutely essential leadership trait in today’s business world. Leading by personal example not only helps to build better organizations but it also helps to nurture better team members and help them become leaders as well.
