Class of 2012, Journalism and Spanish
Arte Público Press
Laura Sanders, senior at Westminster College, spent the summer in Houston interning at Arte Público Press, exploring her interests in bilingual journalism in the US.
Arte Público Press is the largest bilingual book publisher in the US. It is based in Houston, TX at the University of Houston. Her duties as an intern included updating the website, latinoteca.com, with news and information about books and authors, as well as making sure the information on vendor websites, like scribd.com and amazon.com, remained up-to-date. Laura was also involved in pulling together information on all of APP's books so that they can be sold as e-books for the Kindle. Recently, she was able to help send off printed loose-leaf copies to peer editors for last-minute corrections, additions, suggestions, and reviews.
Dr. Dennison from the Spanish department helped Laura find this unique opportunity. Laura says about her internship and its effect on her future goals:“As far as my future goals, I still (perhaps even more now) want to work in the bilingual print industry, although my eyes have been open to possible options in the marketing section rather than the editing/revision section. My ideal job is still to work for the government, translating and/or proofreading documents. With the economy the way it is though, any job's a good job, right?”
