Alcohol and Substance Abuse

We know that students often take calculated risks during their college years while exploring new environments and opportunities and that some of these experiences may include the use of alcohol and/or drugs. The Wellness Center operates from a harm-reduction approach via active outreach activities (including offering campus lectures on alcohol responsibility, educational presentations to clubs and organizations, and alcohol free events in collaboration with Westminster’s Peer Health Educators) in addition to the provision of the Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) Program. The Wellness Center advocates for education and assumption of a healthy, proactive stance when it comes to the use of such substances in order to promote healthier patterns of use (including reduction and abstinence), alternatives to use and/or situations in which substances are likely to be used, and acknowledgement of protective behaviors that can decrease the likelihood of health or safety concerns connected to substance use.
