1st Year Initiative

Overview: The Policy Center on the First-Year of College, in partnership with Educational Benchmarking (EBI), has developed the First-Year Initiative (FYI) Study with support by grants from The Atlantic Philanthropies and The Pew Charitable Foundation. Research and experience have shown that targeted seminars for first-year students correlate with improving student success with the first-year experience, retention and student satisfaction. The FYI survey is administered to students at the end of the first-year seminar, providing institutions with feedback regarding seminar outcomes. The FYI provides insight into first year student perceptions regarding course impact on: study strategies; academic /cognitive skills; critical thinking, connection with peers, connection with faculty, etc.; knowledge of policies and services; sense of belonging/acceptance; overall effectiveness of the course/seminar; overall satisfaction with the institution; and, effectiveness of course instructional methods. Roughly 55 institutions use the survey.

Use at WC: The FYI was first used in Fall 2004 with more than 205 students enrolled in Westminster Seminar.
