2008 Baseball Season Scheduled To Begin February 26
The Westminster College baseball season is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, February 26, when Lincoln University visits Fulton for a 3:00 p.m. contest on Saucier Field.
For the Blue Jays, who failed to make the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament field last year, the 2008 season is a chance for redemption. This year's squad can snap a streak of five losing seasons and make a bid for a conference title Westminster last won in 2001. This is the challenge facing a squad composed of six seniors, four juniors, nine sophomores and 10 freshmen. And, it will be the responsibility of key returnees to produce early while the newcomers learn the system and get acclimated.
Aaron Miller and Joe Leake are the only returning players to receive post-season honors a year ago. Miller, a senior catcher, earned second team all-conference recognition while leading the team in hitting (.339), runs (33), hits (42), RBI (27) and stolen bases (8-of-11) last season. Leake, a junior short stop, was a second team all-league pick, who batted .304 and drew a team-high 23 walks in 2007.
Jesse Jett and Mike Silver are two returning starters who will be looked to for offense. Jett, a senior infielder, batted .325 a year ago and drove in 26 runs. Silver, a junior outfielder, batted .252, scored 23 runs and drove in 22 runs. Senior Grant Shell returns to first base after appearing in 23 games last year. He batted .323 and led the team with 130 put outs.
Pitching could be a strong point for Westminster with the return of three starters, led by senior Phillip Stoll, who finished 5-4 a year ago with a 3.43 ERA. Stoll pitched a team-high 57.2 innings and recorded a team-high 31 strike outs. Senior Tyler Shalbot went 2-2, compiled a 3.67 ERA and recorded 17 strike outs in 34.1 innings. Sophomore Curt Byrd worked his way into the starting rotation last year, compiling a 3-1 record and a 3.25 ERA. He struck out 19 batters in 36 innings of work.
Baseball And Softball Teams Both Sixth In SLIAC Polls
Westminster College is picked sixth in both the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference preseason baseball and softball polls, which are voted on by the conference coaches.
The Blue Jay baseball squad finished the 2007 season 15-21 overall and sixth in the league standings at 9-9. Webster University is the defending SLIAC league and tournament champion.
Westminster concluded the 2007 softball season with a 9-29 overall mark and placed seventh in the league at 4-10. Webster is the defending league and tournament champion.
