Matt Mitchell joined the Westminster College athletic staff as men's head basketball coach and golf coach in 1998. In addition to his coaching responsibilities he teaches physical education classes. In 2005 Mitchell relinquished his golf coaching duties to assume responsibilities as director of athletics.

Mitchell is a Missourian, having grown up in Lexington, Missouri. He played collegiate basketball at Valparaiso University before transferring to the University of Arkansas. He played for Eddie Sutton and Nolan Richardson at Arkansas. He received his undergraduate degree in education from Arkansas in 1987 and then completed a graduate degree in recreation and park administration from Western Illinois University in 1990.

Prior to his appointment at Westminster, Mitchell held assistant coaching positions at Millsaps College, Western Illinois, Rhodes College and Belmont Abbey College.

Mitchell and his wife, Venita, live in Fulton with their two children, daughter Bailey (6-20-95), and son Kalin (11-25-97).
