Six Football Blue Jays Recognized For Academics By UMAC

Fulton, Mo. - Six Westminster College football players have earned Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference honors for the 2009 fall season. To be eligible a player must post a 3.50 or better semester grade point average on a 4.0 scale and compete in the sport in which he or she is nominated in the season that corresponds with the selection.

Twenty Blue Jays Receive UMAC South Division Football Honors

Westminster College’s Daniel Eidson was named the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference South Division Special Teams Football Player of the Year. Eidson, a senior from Camdenton, Missouri (Camdenton High School), was a UMAC South Division First Team All-Conference pick at both quarterback and punter, and one of 20 Blue Jays to earn UMAC South Division All-Conference honors. The Blue Jays finished the season with a  5-5 overall record and placed second in the UMAC South Division at 2-1.

Westminster's Givens And G. Lyles Receive Awards

Fulton, Mo. - Tuesday was a day to remember for Westminster College sophomore wide receiver Carl Givens. After being named Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, Givens was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week.
 
Givens (Chesterfield, Mo./Chaminade), caught a career-high 13 passes for a career-high 240 yards and three touchdowns in Westminster's 49-26 UMAC South Division win over MacMurray College this past Saturday. Givens completed the season as the team's top receiver, catching 69 passes for 1,141 yards and 13 touchdowns in 10 games.
 
Givens was not the only Westminster football player to be recognized for his play in Westminster's season-ending win. Freshman linebacker Gus Lyles (St. Louis, Mo./Webster Groves) was named UMAC South Division Defensive Player of the Week for his 13-tackle performance.

Westminster Wins Football Finale 49-26, Finishes Season 5-5

Fulton, Mo. – Westminster College closed out the 2009 football campaign and sent the senior class out in style, topping MacMurray College 49-26 in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference South Division game on Priest Field here Saturday.

The Blue Jays (5-5, 201 UMAC South) built up a 21-7 lead after the first half of play and led 42-13 after three quarters over MacMurray (1-9, 0-3 UMAC South). Westminster rolled up 532 yards of offense with senior Daniel Eidson completing 28 passes for 391 yards and five touchdowns. Carl Givens recorded a season high 13 receptions for a season high 240 yards and three scores. Freshman James Gladstone and junior Tyson Kankolenski each recorded touchdown receptions, and Isaiah Mosley carried the ball four times for 87 yards, including an individual single-game school record 71-yard TD run. Freshman defensive lineman Rodney Lyles got in the scoring column, intercepting a pass and racing 51 yards for a touchdown. Not to be outdone, junior kicker Jake Hilton went a season-high 7-for-7 in PATs.

Blue Jay Bits: The Blue Jay defense recorded a school record five interceptions...Westminster is now 3-5 all-time against MacMurray but has won two in a row…Eidson and fellow seniors Slava Prokhorets, Austin Spradling and Conor Tierney played in their final collegiate game…Eidson finished the season with 26 touchdown passes and his three-year career with 57 touchdown passes.

WC Football Season Ends Saturday, Basketball To Begin

Fulton, Mo. - Westminster College closes out the 2009 football season Saturday with an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference South Division game against MacMurray College. The Senior Day game kicks off at 1:00 p.m. on Priest Field on the Westminster campus.

The Blue Jays (4-5, 1-1 UMAC South Division) meet MacMurray for the eighth time in the series which dates back to 1996. Westminster trails the all-time series 5-2, but the Blue Jays captured a 45-24 road win last year over MacMurray (1-8, 0-2 UMAC South).

While the football season is coming to a close, both the Westminster College men and women open the 2009-10 basketball seasons in the next week. The Blue Jay men open their season at Illinois College Sunday, and the women host Ozark Christian College Tuesday. Both Westminster teams are picked first in their respective St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference pre-season polls.

Blue Jays Come Up Short In Quest For South Division Title

Westminster College and Greenville College met Saturday in Greenville, Illinois, with the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference South Division title on the line. In the end, Greenville (6-2, 3-0 UMAC South) claimed the title with a 42-35 win over Westminster (4-5, 1-1 UMAC South).

Web Cast Available For Westminster Football At Greenville

The Westminster College football game at Greenville College this Saturday, November 7, will be broadcast on the World Wide Web. The game is scheduled to kick off at 12:00 noon.

Westminster and Greenville meet in a game pitting the top two teams in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference South Division. Greenville (5-2, 2-0 UMAC South) wins the division with a win. Westminster (4-4, 1-0 UMAC South) needs a win to stay in contention for the outright title. The Blue Jays close the season against UMAC South Division opponent MacMurray College on Saturday, November 14.

Westminster Rallies In Second Half For 28-27 Win In Dome

The Westminster College football team overcame a 27-7 deficit after three quarters of play to down Martin Luther College 28-27 in a 2009 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Dome Day contest Friday in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Martin Luther (6-3) intercepted four Westminster passes in the first half and built up a 19-0 lead by intermission. Westminster (4-4) got back in the game at 19-7 with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Daniel Eidson to Tyson Kankolenski with 6:56 left in the third period. But, Martin Luther came back on the next series, scoring a touchdown and a two-point conversion to lead 27-7 with 26 seconds to go in the third quarter.

The Blue Jay defense stiffened and the offense went to work in the final quarter, scoring 21-unanswered points on a 29-yard run by Isaiah Mosley, a nine-yard run by Eidson and a game-clinching 17-yard pass from Eidson to James Gladstone with just over four minutes remaining.

Westminster compiled 380 yards in the game, with 270 yards coming in the second half. Meanwhile, the Blue Jay defense gave up 365 yards in the game, but just 128 in the second half.

Eidson completed 18-of-27 passes for 273 yards, with four interceptions, two touchdowns and he rushed for a score. Mosley rushed seven times for 59 yards and a touchdown. Gladstone caught eight passes for 129 yards and a score, and Kankolenski snared three passes for 72 yards and a touchdown. Ivan Malpica led the defense with 11 tackles and Kelvin Williams recorded eight tackles and blocked an extra point.

Blue Jays Score Early, But LaGrange Records 34-17 Win

The Westminster College Blue Jay football team dropped its second game in a row, falling to LaGrange College 34-17 in a non-conference contest Saturday in LaGrange, Georgia.

Westminster (3-4) took the early 7-0 lead on a five-yard pass from Daniel Eidson to Tyson Kankolenski and a Jake Hilton extra point, but LaGrange (5-3) returned an interception 14 yards for a score and added the point after to tie the score 7-7. LaGrange added touchdown passes of 37 and 27 yards and a 32-yard field goal to lead 24-7 at intermission.

The Blue Jays had two opportunities to get back in the game early in the third period. The first drive ended with a fumble on the LaGrange six-yard line and the second drive ended with a sack after Westminster faced fourth and goal at the LaGrange one-yard line. LaGrange, which is celebrating Homecoming this weekend, scored on a 50-yard pass later in the third period to go up 31-7, before Westminster got on the board on a Hilton 32-yard field goal with four minutes remaining in the third quarter. LaGrange added a fourth-quarter field goal and Westminster closed out the scoring in a 34-17 loss when Dan Franklin scored on a one-yard run with 35 seconds remaining in the contest.

Westminster outgained LaGrange 378 yards to 360 yards, but four turnovers proved to be the difference in the contest. Eidson completed 21-of-36 passes for 252 yards, two interceptions and a score. Franklin completed 10-of-21 passes for 89 yards and an interception. Carl Givens caught 10 passes for 146 yards while Kankolenski caught 10 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown. Austin Spradling and Ivan Malpica led the defense, recording six and five tackles respectively.

Westminster Blue Jays Fall To Huntingdon (Ala.) 53-34

Fulton, Mo. – Westminster College took an early 14-0 lead and led 21-19 at intermission, but Huntingdon College (Ala.) rallied for 34 second-half points in downing the Blue Jays 53-34 in non-conference football action Saturday in front of a Parents’ Weekend/Homecoming crowd.

The Blue Jays (3-3) got on the board with a pair of Daniel Eidson passes. The first covered 17 yards to James Gladstone and the second was good for 26 yards to Carl Givens. Huntingdon (5-1) cut the deficit in half just before the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter Huntingdon scored twice, sandwiched around a five-yard Eidson run leaving Westminster in the lead 21-19 at the break.

Huntingdon, which entered the game ninth nationally in total offense and rolled up 784 yards of offense, scored twice in a five-minute span to go ahead 33-21 in the third quarter. The Blue Jays got back in the game on a 60-yard pass from Eidson to Greg Finger, but could get no closer than 33-27.

Eidson completed 36-of-72 passes for 425 yards and three touchdowns; however he was intercepted four times. Givens caught 12 passes for 179 yards and two scores. Although Westminster rolled up 518 yards of offense, the Blue Jays managed just 57 yards rushing on 18 attempts.

Two Blue Jays Honored By UMAC For Play Last Week

Two Westminster College (Mo.) football players have earned Upper Midwest Athletic Conference South Division Player of the Week honors for their roles in Westminster's 35-34 road win over Eureka College this past Saturday.

Carl Givens, a sophomore wide receiver from Chesterfield, Missouri (Chaminade) has been named the South Division Offensive Player of the Week. Givens caught eight passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns against Eureka. Givens leads the team with 25 passes for 465 yards and eight touchdowns this season.

Ivan Malpica, a sophomore safety from Wright City, Missouri (Wright City), has been named the South Division Defensive Player of the Week for his play. Malpica had 11 tackles in Westminster's 35-34 win over Eureka. Malpica is second on the team with 37 tackles through five games this season.

Blue Jays Get By Eureka 35-34 For Third Road Victory

Westminster College slipped by Eureka College 35-34 in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference South Division football battle when Eureka missed a game-tying extra point with 1:52 remaining in the game Saturday in Eureka, Illinois. The Blue Jays (3-2, 1-0 UMAC South) have won three road games in a row and are now 2-0 in the all-time series with Eureka (2-4, 0-2 UMAC South).

Eureka grabbed the first lead of the game, but Westminster came back with touchdown passes of 27 yards and 10 yards from Daniel Eidson to Carl Givens. The Red Devils scored in the closing minute of the first half and the two teams went to halftime tied 14-14. After Westminster's Jerry Ford scored on a two-yard run, Eureka countered, evening the score 21-21. Westminster broke on top 35-21 on an Eidson six-yard run and a 30-yard pass from Eidson to Greg Finger. Eureka cut the deficit to 35-28 late in the third quarter, setting the stage for Eureka's final charge which ended with a missed extra point.

Eidson, the UMAC South Division Offensive and Special Teams Player of the Week last week, completed 20-of-39 passes for 256 yards and three scores, and he rushed for 60 yards and a score. Givens caught eight passes for 117 yards and two scores, while Finger caught one pass for 30 yards and a touchdown. Isaiah Mosley rushed for a team-high 65 yards and Ford ran for 30 yards and a score. Equally important was the kicking of Jake Hilton, who was 5-of-5 in extra points.

Although the Westminster defense surrendered 484 yards, the Blue Jays recorded three second-half interceptions, one each by Clark Roberts, DeMarco Moorehead and Tashan Fultz. Ivan Malpica led the Westminster defense with a game-high 11 tackles. Roberts and Adam Howe each tallied eight tackles.

Westminster (Mo.) Senior Receives Two UMAC Awards

Westminster College senior quarterback/punter Daniel Eidson has been named both the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference South Division Offensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for September 28-October 3.

Eidson (Camdenton, Mo./Camdenton) completed 21-of-35 passes for 308 yards and six touchdowns, with just one interception, in Saturday’s 47-14 non-conference victory at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas. Eidson completed one pass of 50 yards to Carl Givens and had two other passes to Givens of 31-yards each. Eidson also punted four times for a 45.8 yard average. He had a long punt of 59 yards, landed one punt inside the 20 and had one touch back.

Blue Jays Bits: Westminster is 2-2 overall and begins UMAC South Division play this Saturday at Eureka College…The Blue Jays are 1-0 all-time against Eureka, winning last year’s game 42-25 in Fulton…Saturday’s game at Eureka is the fourth road game of the season for Westminster.

Westminster Football Evens Record At 2-2 With 47-14 Road Win

Westminster College scored early and often in downing Haskell Indian Nations University 47-14 in non-conference football action Saturday in Lawrence, Kansas.

The Blue Jays (2-2) rolled up 421 yards of offense with 327 yards coming through the air. Quarterback Daniel Eidson completed 21 of 35 passes for 308 yards, six touchdowns and one interception. His main target, wide receiver Carl Givens, caught seven balls for 174 yards and three touchdowns. Tyson Kankolenski, James Gladstone and Greg Finger each recorded a touchdown catch. Isaiah Mosley carried the ball nine times for 85 yards and a score.

The Westminster defense was on the field for over 35 minutes, but it made little difference. The Blue Jays limited Haskell to 258 yards, led by Ivan Malpica, who recorded 11 tackles and blocked a field goal attempt. Rodney Lyles finished with eight tackles.

Westminster College Freshman Garners UMAC Honor

Westminster College freshman defensive lineman Paul Mpagi has been named the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference South Division Defensive Football Player of the Week for September 14-20.

Mpagi (Houston, Tex./Elsik) recorded four total tackles including two for losses; he recorded two sacks and forced a fumble in Westminster’s 54-14 win over the University of Minnesota-Morris this past Saturday in Morris, Minnesota. It was the first win of the season for the Blue Jays (1-2).

Westminster Picks Up First Victory Of Season, 51-14 (click for stats)

Westminster College scored early and often, and picked up its first football win of the season with a 51-14 victory over the University of Minnesota-Morris Saturday at Big Cat Stadium in Morris, Minnesota.

The Blue Jays (1-2) rolled up 534 yards of offense and limited Minnesota-Morris (2-1) to just 165 yards. Westminster gained 270 yards on the ground with freshman Jerry Ford (Warrensburg, Mo./Warrensburg) leading the way with 99 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore Isaiah Mosley (St. Louis, Mo./University City) finished with 80 yards rushing and two touchdowns, while sophomore Michael McKelvy (Kansas City, Mo./Northeast Law) ran for 58 yards and two scores.

The Blue Jays gained 264 yards through the air. Senior Daniel Eidson (Camdenton, Mo./Camdenton) completed 16 passes for 238 yards and two scores, and junior Dan Franklyn (Chesterfield, Mo./Marquette) came off the bench to complete three passes for 26 yards. Sophomore Kurt Gould (Camdenton, Mo./Camdenton) caught four passes for 102 yards. Freshman James Gladstone (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) and sophomore Stormy Smith (Louisiana, Mo./Louisiana) each recorded a touchdown reception.

Junior kicker Jake Hilton (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) was 6-for-6 in extra point attempts and made a 21-yard field goal.

Defensively, Westminster held Minnesota-Morris to 165 yards, 73 on the ground and 92 through the air. Freshman Paul Mpagi (Houston, Tex./Elsik) recorded four tackles and a pair of sacks. Junior Clark Roberts (Louisiana, Mo./Louisiana) recorded four tackles and an interception, and junior Brandon McDaniel (Tazewell, Va./Tazewell) recorded an interception.

Westminster Rally Falls Short, Blue Jays Drop Home Opener

Westminster College rallied from a 21-point deficit to tie the score 35-35 in the fourth quarter, but Washington University scored last and handed the Blue Jays a 41-35 football defeat Saturday in Fulton, Missouri.

The Blue Jays (0-2) fell behind 21-0 early in the second quarter, but got on the board with a Daniel Eidson to Kurt Gould pass with seven seconds remaining before halftime. Clark Roberts scored on a two-point conversion run, leaving Westminster behind 21-8 at intermission. After Washington U. scored in the third quarter, Eidson ran in form two yards out to cut the deficit to 28-14 with just over two minutes remaining in the third period.

Washington U. went up 35-14 after an interception return for a touchdown near the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter Westminster went to work offensively, scoring on drives of 77, 64 and 76 yards. Isaiah Mosley ran in from two yards out, and Carl Givens reached the end zone on Eidson passes of 52 and 10 yards, with each score followed by a Jake Hilton extra point.

Washington U. (1-1) scored last with 3:41 remaining in the game. The Bears went 57 yards in 11 plays and used 5:22 on the clock. The Blue Jays mounted a final drive, but were halted on downs and the visitors escaped with the win.

Mosley led Westminster with 77 yards rushing and one score. Eidson rushed for a score and completed 17 passes for 253 yards and three touchdowns, and Gould caught seven passes for 66 yards and a touchdown. Givens finished with 76 yards on three catches and two touchdowns. Defensively, the Blue Jays gave up 430 yards. Clark Roberts led Westminster with nine tackles while Darian Garey and Adam Howe each finished with seven tackles.

Blue Jays Fall In Season Opener At Rhodes, 26-14

Memphis, Tenn. – The Westminster College Blue Jay football team was outgained in yardage 317-189 and dropped a 26-14 season-opening decision to host Rhodes College Saturday in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

After Rhodes (1-0) opened the scoring with a 20-yard field goal midway through the first quarter, Westminster (0-1) capitalized on two Rhodes turnovers. Blue Jay senior Austin Spradling returned a fumble 60 yards for a score and junior Jake Hilton tacked on the extra point. Following a Rhodes fumble on the next possession, Daniel Eidson hit junior Carl Givens with an 18-yard touchdown pass. Hilton made his second extra point of the game to give Westminster a 14-3 lead with 10:44 remaining in the first half. But, Rhodes put together a 10-play drive and a five-play drive to grab a 16-14 lead by halftime.

The second half belonged to Rhodes. The Lynx took the second half kick and went 62 yards in 11 plays to grab a 23-14 lead, and added a field goal to start the fourth quarter, extending their lead to the final 26-14 margin.

Westminster senior Daniel Eidson completed just 13 of 36 passes for 141 yards, with three interceptions and a score while being sacked four times. Blue Jay junior Carl Givens caught four passes for 46 yards and a touchdown, and junior Tyson Kankolenski recorded 41 receiving yards on four catches. Defensively, junior Clark Roberts recorded a game-high 12 tackles and sophomore Ivan Malpica finished with eight tackles. Senior Conor Tierney recorded two sacks for 26 yards in losses.

2009 Football Captains Named At Westminster College (Mo.)

Fulton, Mo. - Seniors Daniel Eidson and Austin Spradling, and juniors Clark Roberts and Wil Lampkin have been named captains of the Westminster College football team for the 2009 season.

The Blue Jays, who are in preparation for their return to Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play this season, open the season with a non-conference game against Rhodes College on Saturday, September 5, in Memphis, Tennessee.

Kuci Joins Westminster College (Mo.) Football Staff

Fulton, Mo. - When the 2009 Westminster College football team opens camp Wednesday, August 12, the team and coaching staff will be under the watchful eye of Kim Kuci, a football coach from Berlin, Germany. Kuci is joining the coaching staff as a volunteer observer.

Kuci has extensive experience in football as a player and coach. He played professionally for the Berlin Thunder in NFL Europe from 1999-2003, and he has been coaching ever since, currently with the Berlin Rebels. Kuci will be with the team during camp and throughout the season, learning and sharing his knowledge with the Blue Jay staff and players.

Blue Jay Bits: Over one hundred players are expected to report to camp, the largest pre-season squad in the history of Westminster football…Coach John Welty enters his 11th season as Westminster head coach and he is in his 12th season on the Blue Jay staff, and he is entering his 19th season as a college head coach...The first practice is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and the Thursday and Friday practices are scheduled for 4:00.

2009 Westminster Fall Camps Open In Middle Of August

The Westminster College football, soccer and volleyball seasons get underway in the middle of August when players report for fall camp.

Blue Jay football players are the first to arrive on campus on Wednesday, August 12. The members of the men’s and women’s soccer squads, and the volleyball players, report on Tuesday, August 18. Players should contact each head coach for more information.

Westminster Football Changing Conference Affiliation, Again

Beginning with the 2009 fall season, the Westminster College football squad will play as a associate member of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. This change was brought about by the changing landscape of small college athletics and the decision of two St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools to eliminate football.
