Students who are enrolled full-time at Westminster College and who wish to study off-campus may choose from Westminster's 150+ approved foreign and/or domestic programs.  The office can provide assistance with advising, potential credit transfer and financial assistance.  As you consider the "world" of opportunities available in study abroad, check out the following links for additional information...

International Exchange & Direct-Enrollment Programs
Exchanges and direct-enrollment programs are also approved programs, but which offer special arrangements for Westminster College students.  Watch for this list to grow as new programs are being considered each year.  Current programs include:

  • Attend one of five universities in Northern Ireland.

 Chicago Urban Studies Program

United Nations Semester

  • Includes seminars and an internship at U.N. headquarters in New York City.   

Washington Semester

  • Located at American University, Washington D.C.
  • More than 12 one-semester programs, including political science, international relations, journalism, environmental studies, and the visual arts.
  • May include internship or study abroad.
  • Scholarships are available.

Westminster-Sponsored Programs

Faculty–Led Travel:

  • Westminster faculty organize short off-campus travel courses during the summer and winter breaks.
  • Courses are usually listed in the schedule of courses for each semester.  Students may seek additional information from the professor offering the particular study excursion and enroll in the course during registration with their advisor.
  • International Program’s study tours have included a safari to Kenya; a study of the civilizations of Greece and Rome; an expedition retracing the ancient pilgrimage routes from Paris to Madrid; an environmental studies course in Belize and Iceland; an exploration of castles and cathedrals in England and France; a geology trip to the Scottish Moors; a tour of Denmark's education system; and many more.  Watch for new courses coming up next year!

Take a Friend Home (click HERE for more):

  • The Take a Friend Home program is specifically intended to allow for a cultural immersion experience and exchange between International and American students.  International and American students will team up in pairs of twos and will host each other in their respective homes for a period of 2 – 3 weeks. 
  • Students are selected for the program through an application and interview process and are expected to participate in a “pre-departure” course for credit during the latter part of the spring semester.   Following the course and travel in either exchange, students should share their experiences, BOTH the international and domestic, with the Westminster College community through presentations and / or other methods as established in a pre-determined plan.

Financial Aid, Funding & Other Helpful Hints Credit Transfer Opportunities
  • Each year the college awards the Cranshaw Scholarship for study in the United Kingdom and the Piper Scholarship for study in the United Kingdom or Europe.  Applications are available in November of each year and due the following January.  Amounts range from $5000 - $15,000.
  • In most cases, all financial aid except work-study may be applied to exchange programs.
  • Students participating in affiliated programs may transfer federal financial aid and some state aid, if a Missouri resident.
  • Students may be eligible for scholarships awarded by the affiliated institution.
  • The Study Abroad Office provides assistance to students with applications to other national and international scholarships to help finance their studies.

  • Credits should be transferable provided the application for study abroad is completed through the Office of International Programs.  Students should always confer with academic advisors when making plans for study abroad.
  • Appropriate courses should be pre-approved for credit transfer prior to departure, with some exceptions.
  • In most cases, credit will transfer, but grades will not.  Transcripts will be noted with Credit or No Credit notations.

Affiliated programs are approved institutions based on their long history in providing quality overseas education for semester, year-long, and summer abroad experiences.  Credits can transfer and funding opportunities such as scholarships are available, depending on the program.  (Note:  Federal & State aid for Missouri residents may also apply.)  Keep watching for additional study abroad opportunities through new affiliations in the future.  Meanwhile, several options currently available include:  (Be sure to check websites for the most up to date information.)
