For academic year 2008-2009, Westminster is again providing a fully configured, ready-to-go computer to make the technological transition into college-life as easy as possible for new students.  Westminster College has partnered with CDWG to provide well-supported computing option for student computers.  Westminster College Information Technology negotiated a bulk pricing agreement for a specific computer model that will serve your student well for their four years at Westminster College.
Note that this is a voluntary program.  Westminster College does not require that students bring a computer to campus, but most do.  We provide these recommendations as a service to the parent and to the student to help in making what can be a difficult choice.

Stable, Robust Technology
The selected laptop is also used by faculty and staff at Westminster College in their daily routines.  The HP 6515B has proven to be a solid, reliable machine.  The Westminster College recommended laptop is configured as follows:

  • Processor:  AMD TL58 (2.2GHz) dual core processor.  In English: Very fast.
  • Memory: 2 GB
  • Display: 14.1” (1280 x 800 resolution)
  • Hard disk space: 160 GB
  • CD/DVD: DVD/RW – reads and burns both CDs and DVDs
  • Wired networking capability
  • Wireless networking capability (wireless a, b, g & n supported)
  • Bluetooth wireless included
  • Microsoft Windows Vista Business
  • Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise

Four Year Warranty with Accidental Damage Protection
Your laptop computer will need to serve you faithfully for four years of education at Westminster College.  The laptops purchased under our program all include a four year warranty that includes accidental damage protection.
Here are some actual situations that occurred this year to students that purchased laptops under our program:

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words
In one case on campus in 2007, though, a picture was worth a lot more.  A student’s picture frame fell from her bookshelf, the corner of the frame penetrating her new laptop’s display.  Through her enrollment in the WC purchase program, this student got a loaner laptop while her laptop was sent out for the installation of a free replacement display.

Sickening...Literally
“Accidental damage” comes in many forms.  One student’s entire laptop was replaced free of charge due to the flu.  Said student managed to empty the contents of his stomach onto his laptop’s keyboard, thus turning his laptop into what HP considered a biohazard.  The end result:  A replaced laptop at no charge.

Have a Seat
A chair can be a great storage space, but it’s not the best place for a laptop when a friend drops by and decides to have a seat without first checking what’s in the chair.  In this situation, the student’s laptop screen was ruined.  HP replaced the screen at no charge.

If you drop your laptop or something unspeakable befalls it or one of its components, HP will either replace the faulty component or the entire laptop up to one time per year.

On-Site Assistance
Although IT staff cannot generally repair hardware, for laptops purchased under this program, IT staff will help your student get necessary support whenever a hardware problem occurs.  As a part of this service, we also provide what we call the “loaner laptop” service, which is described below.

Loaner Laptop
Is your Westminster-recommended laptop feeling under the weather and in need of repair?  While you’re waiting for your repair, there’s no need to be without a computer.  In most cases, IT will be able to provide you with a loaner laptop to use in the interim.  Of course, using this benefit is based on availability of loaners, but we haven’t yet had to turn anyone away!

Software is Included
Microsoft Office can be an expensive upgrade to any machine.  Under the Westminster College Laptop Purchase Program, Microsoft Windows and Office are included in the price.  Further, you are also entitled to any upgrades to Windows or Office that are released before you graduate.
