Biography

Dr. Natasia Sexton Cain is director of choirs at Westminster College and Assistant Professor of Music.  At Westminster, Dr. Cain teaches Music of the Western World, Music History I, II, applied voice lessons, and conducts the Wren Quire, Blue Jay Glee Club, and the Westminster Women’s Chorale.

Dr. Cain has presented for Louisiana Choral Directors Association and Indiana Choral Directors Association.  She has been a clinician and adjudicator in Missouri, Indiana, Louisiana, and California, and conducted the Northeast Arkansas Women’s Honor Choir in 2001.  She has published numerous recording and octavo reviews for The Choral Journal, and her article “Sara Teasdale at 125:  Her Lyric Poetry Still Inspires Lovely Music” was published as the cover article for that journal in November 2009.

Dr. Cain completed her DMA degree at Louisiana State University in choral conducting. In 2001, she was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award and inducted into Pi Kappa Lambda National Honor Society.  At San Jose State University, she studied with Charlene Archibeque and completed a MA degree in choral conducting.  Dr. Cain graduated magna cum laude from Belmont University with a BM degree in voice performance.

Prior to coming to Westminster College, Dr. Cain taught at Franklin College in Indiana, at St. Andrew’s School in Saratoga, California, and in the Fort Bragg Public Schools also in California.  Her high school choirs received outstanding ratings at district and state contests.  In California, Dr. Cain worked as a church musician conducting choirs at Burlingame Presbyterian Church and Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church.  From 1996-1998, she was the conductor of the San Jose Symphony Chorus where she prepared the chorus for performances of major works by Orff, Brahms, Stravinsky, Mahler, and Beethoven.

In 1998, Dr. Cain was one of 14 conductors chosen from North America to study with Helmuth Rilling and conduct at the Oregon Bach Festival.  Dr. Cain is a member of American Choral Directors Association, National Association of Teachers of Singing, Music Educators National Conference, and College Music Society.

Natasia Cain is married to The Rev. Dr. Cliff Cain.  They have two cocker spaniels, Lula Belle and Bessie.
