Dr. Amspoker has served as Chair of the Department of Biology & Environmental Science, Chair of the Division of Natural and Mathematical Sciences, and Vice-Chair of the Faculty.  He serves as the advisor to students interested in pursuing careers in any of the health care professions.

Born and raised in Southern California, Dr. Mike Amspoker developed an early and incurable fascination with the oceans and marine life.  He earned a B.S. in Zoology from the University of California, Davis, a M.S. in Biology from San Diego State University, and a Ph.D. in Botany from Oregon State University.  Dr. Amspoker continues to be enamored with marine and freshwater diatoms, a group of beautiful and ecologically significant microscopic algae.  He recently described a new diatom genus, Hyaloneis.

In addition to the on-campus courses Belise he teaches in the fields of general biology, botany, phycology, microbiology and ecology, Dr. Amspoker has taken students on a number of three-week summer session trips to Belize, Kenya, Peru and Ecuador (including the Galapagos Islands).  Another trip to Belize is planned for May 2013.  Check the following links for more information about the trips to Belize:
