Bio

I first started teaching at Westminster in 1995 and had continuously taught here since 1997 till I retired in the spring of 2020. I received my doctorate in Classics and Classical Archaeology at the University of Missouri-Columbia (1993). I received my BA in Greek, Latin, and Mathematics from the University of California-Davis (1978). I taught a wide variety of courses about the Greeks and the Romans and my academic interests are fairly diverse, from such things as the coins of the Greeks and Romans (numismatics), the intersection of Medicine & Religion, the foods that they ate and other aspects of their daily lives.

The small class sizes and the chance to engage in dialogue with the students is one of the things I liked most about Westminster. As an aid to my teaching, I also liked to use various media (including the web) and other means, such as Greek and Roman coins (real), pottery (modern imitations), and food (prepared by me using authentic recipes). Students were always welcome to drop by my office if they had questions or just wanted to chat. I also encouraged them to e-mail me or call me at home if they had questions—although I typically said not after 10 pm or so!

I live in Columbia with my wife and daughter. When time allows I like do woodworking, play tennis and walk on the various hiking trails in Columbia, but we all enjoy cooking. My daughter was a great help with the aesthetic design and layout of my web pages.
