Don Tomnitz is the Vice Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of D.R. Horton, Inc. He joined D.R. Horton in 1983 to begin the land development function for the company. From 1983 to 1992, he served as the Division President of various homebuilding operating markets. In 1992, Mr. Tomnitz’ industry knowledge, leadership experience and public speaking skills made him an integral member of the management team during the Initial Public Offering (IPO) process, which included visiting with and doing presentations for investment bankers, analysts and potential shareholders. D.R. Horton completed its IPO in June of 1992.
Shortly thereafter, Don Tomnitz was named Vice President-Western Region, managing the Company’s growing operations west of the Mississippi. In 1996, Mr. Tomnitz became the President of D.R. Horton’s Homebuilding Division and in January 1998, he was elected as an Executive Vice President. In November 1998, Mr. Tomnitz was named Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer and in March 2000, he was also named the Company’s President.
As the Vice Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of D.R. Horton, Mr. Tomnitz has been a guest on numerous national television programs, including CNBC’s Squawk Box and Morning Call, Bloomberg News and the Neil Cavuto show on Fox. He has been named one of the Best CEO’s in America by Institutional Investor magazine three times and has been included in the Associated Press CEO “Winners.” In 2010, he was listed as one of the 50 Most Influential People in Real Estate as determined by Bloomberg Businessweek. He has also received the Mexico Area Chamber of Commerce G. Andy Runge Ambassador Award and the Westminster College Alumni Achievement Award.
Prior to joining D.R. Horton, Mr. Tomnitz was a Captain in the U.S. Army, a Vice President of Republic Bank of Dallas, N.A., and a Vice President of Crow Development Company, a Trammell Crow Company. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics from Westminster College, where he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity and a Distinguished Military Graduate from the ROTC program. He also holds a Masters of Business Administration in Finance from Western Illinois University, where he was a member of the Sigma Iota Epsilon honor society and the Phi Kappa Phi national scholastic society.
Mr. Tomnitz married Sharon K. Stevens, a 1971 graduate of William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri. Mrs. Tomnitz has a Masters Degree in Guidance and Counseling from Western Illinois University and a Masters of Business Administration in finance from Southern Methodist University. Their daughter, Taylor, is a senior at Loyola Marymount University and their son, Blake, is a graduate of Boston College Carroll School of Management working as an investment banker in New York City. The family has lived in Dallas, TX, since 1976.
Don’s interests include: Riding his Harley, hunting and fishing in Alaska, skiing, hiking and relaxing on the beach. He participates with his wife in many charities and philanthropic endeavors.
