Alumni Honored for Achievements

Nine Westminster College alumni were selected to be honored at the annual Alumni Honors Convocation held April 24 in the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Aldermanbury on the Westminster campus.

"This group of Westminster alumni are truly living the Westminster mission-being leaders in a global community and living lives of
success, significance and service," Westminster Alumni Association President David Crane told the crowd. "We congratulate you on the pride and honor which you have brought to Westminster College."

Randall P. Johnson of Naperville, IL, class of '74, was awarded the Alumni Loyalty Award, which is given to an alumnus who demonstrates a continued interest in Westminster College though contributions of time, talent, influence and/or funds and who have demonstrated exceptional loyalty, commitment, dedication and service to the College. Johnson is Director of the Midwest Region for Chattem Inc., a consumer health care corporation, a position he has held since 1996.

Lifetime Alumni Achievement Awards were presented to Heather Triplett Biehl of Acton, MA, class of '89; Jim Flink, Columbia, MO, class of '83; Walter F. Hester III, Incline Village, NV, class of '77; John R. McFarland of St. Louis, MO, class of '62; Dr. Michael P. Williams of Houston, TX, class of '73; and Dr. Peter Yu of Huntsville, AL, class of '59.

The Lifetime Alumni Achievement Award is presented annually to alumni whose accomplishments reflect the Westminster mission and who have distinguished themselves through personal achievements, professional achievements and/or have made significant contributions to society.

Biehl is Vice President in charge of Intelligence Programs for BBN Technologies, a company that creates and markets analytic tools and technical solutions for the United States Intelligence community.

Flink has recently taken the position of Vice President of News Operations for Newsy.com. For three years he hosted the talk show "Kansas City Today" on KCTE-AM. During his distinguished career, he has served as anchor and reporter for WKG-TV in Fort Wayne; WEVV-TV, Evansville, IN; and KBIA-FM; WTVA-TV in Tupelo, MS and KOMU-TV in Columbia, MO.

Hester is CEO of Maui Jim Sunglasses, currently the fastest growing polarized sunglass maker in the world. Today, Maui Jim employs over 600 worldwide and has 11 international offices where its sunglasses are distributed and sold.

Since 1993, McFarland has served as President of Tampsco Enterprises, Inc., a family office that manages the assets and related affairs for a substantial St. Louis family and the three charitable foundations which the family created and operates.

Dr. Williams is the Founding Pastor of JOY Tabernacle in Houston, which in 1999 became the first African American church to relocate to the heart of Houston's inner city for service and advocacy.

Dr. Yu retired from medical practice as a thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon with Huntsville Hospital in 2002. The surgical/trauma intensive care unit was named in his honor there in 1999.

The final awards of the ceremony were the Young Alumni Achievement Awards presented to James M. Howard, Jr. of Bentonville, AR, class of '03, and Ehren L. Earleywine, Columbia, MO, class of '94. Earleywine was unable to attend the ceremony due to coaching commitments.

Established in 2009, the Young Alumni Achievement Award is presented annually to recognize alumni who demonstrate the Westminster mission through outstanding achievement early in their chosen career and/or dedicated leadership and service to their community.

Howard is the CEO and owner of I.O. Metro Furniture Company, a group of import furniture stores that has grown in five years from only one store to 17 stores in eight states with over 100 employees.

Earleywine is the Head Softball Coach at the University of Missouri in Columbia. He coached the Big 12 Championship Team (2008-2009) and the Regional Championship Team (2007-2008). He was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year in 2007 and the ACC Coach of the Year in 2005.

The 1960 MCAU Championship basketball team from Westminster, coached by Coach Gene Kimbrell, was also honored by Westminster Director of Athletics Matt Mitchell at the ceremony and the team was inducted into the Westminster Athletic Hall of Fame. In addition, the 50-year class, the class of 1960, was recognized.
