Westminster Mourns Passing of Davis Projects for Peace Founder

Kathryn Wasserman Davis - Family Photo via BloombergThe Westminster College community mourns the passing of Kathryn Wasserman Davis and sends condolences to her son Shelby and his wife Gale. Their philanthropy has helped transform Westminster College over the past decade from a regional college of 700 students to a nationally recognized global community of 1,100 students, which includes 180 international students from 75 different countries.

Through the Davis UWC Scholarships, nearly 200 students have been able to receive a Westminster education. Kathryn Davis's generosity has made it possible for hundreds of American college and university students, including Westminster students, to implement their own ideas for building peace in the world.

"We join our brothers and sisters in the Davis UWC Scholars family in celebrating the life of a distinguished woman whose kindness made an enormous impact through the leadership and service of young people around the world," says President Barney Forsythe.

On her 100th birthday in 2007, she initiated the program Projects for Peace, giving $10,000 grants ever year so that students across the nation would have the opportunity to make a difference in the world through their fresh new ideas. Thanks to those funds, Westminster students have been able to complete projects such as water purification, health needs assessments, greenhouse construction and school literacy in places like Nepal, Thailand, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Colombia. Those experiences are helping today's youth to become tomorrow's leaders.

Westminster College's thoughts are with the Davis family and we thank all of them for what they have made possible for the students of our community. We share the sentiments of Westminster staff member Pat Kirby who has worked closely with the Davis family over the years. Pat says: "The family's impact on our College has been transformational. I thank them every day for what they have done for everyone associated with Westminster. We are better because of them! Kathryn is gone but her legacy will live forever."
