Dr. Mike Amspoker, Professor of Biology and Cameron Day Chair at Westminster College, had great visits with many Mesa area high school students and their parents about pursuing a career in the medical, health, or environmental studies fields last Thursday.

He held a free workshop Thursday evening at the OneOhOne Main building and spoke to science and biomedical students at Westwood High School and Campo Verde High School.

Dr. Amspoker Speaks to Mesa High Schoolers

In his discussions with students, Dr. Amspoker talked about the types of courses and experiences that students interested in medical school, dental school, and graduate and professional programs in the sciences might best pursue.  He also introduced them to the Westminster science curriculum with a special emphasis on programs related to the College’s majors in environmental science and environmental studies and the health professions minors.

All of these programs will be offered at the new Westminster campus at Mesa next fall.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the healthcare and social assistance industry is projected to create about 28 percent of all new jobs created in the U.S. economy over the next decade. This industry is expected to grow by 33 percent, or 5.7 million new jobs. Employment growth will be driven by an aging population and longer life expectancies, as well as new treatments and technologies.

Dr. Amspoker also took a tour of the Arizona State University Department of Life Sciences and visited with some area alumni.

Dr. Amspoker serves as the Westminster advisor to students pursuing career in health care professions and has been instrumental in placing many students in prestigious internships and assisting them with acceptance to major medical schools.  He is well known in the biological research field for his work with marine and freshwater diatoms and recently described a new diatom genus, Hyaloneis.
