On March 22-23, Westminster students participated in an archaeological dig at Moore’s Mill battlefield in Calwood, MO.  At this site in July of 1862, Confederate and Union troops collided in a skirmish that proved to be the biggest Civil War battle fought in Callaway County.

Westminster students joined local volunteers, students from Lindenwood and Missouri Valley, as well as three expert battlefield detectives from the University of Nebraska.  Over the course of the two days, diggers unearthed nearly 200 artifacts from the battle including bullets (all shapes and sizes), canister shot, as well as Civil War period horse shoes.  It was truly an amazing experience, and we hope to continue digging in the area.
