Westminster Junior Rachel Backes Earns All-American Honors

Fulton, Mo. – The honors continue to come in for Westminster College’s Rachel Backes. A junior guard from Tipton, Missouri (Tipton High School), Backes has received All-American Honorable Mention honors from DIII News. This is the 20th year that DIII News has named All-American teams.
Backes is one of the most highly decorated student-athletes at Westminster. A three-year team captain of the women’s basketball team, Backes led this year’s team in scoring at 14.4 points a game. She led the team and conference in 3-point field goal percentage (.448) and assists (4.3 a game), and finished 76th nationally in assists a game on a Blue Jay team that finished 11th nationally in scoring offense at 75.1 points a game. She led the team to a school record 20-6 record and the school’s first-ever St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title. In the process, Backes was named SLIAC Player of the Year and was named to the SLIAC All-Conference First Team for the second consecutive year. She earned a spot on the SLIAC All-Tournament Team for the second year in a row and the SLIAC All-Academic Team, and was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 7 Second Team.
Backes, who has helped the Blue Jays go 45-30 over the past three seasons, is seventh on Westminster’s career scoring list with 881 points, sixth on the career assist chart at 222, and 18th on the career rebounding list with 283 caroms.
