Baseball Downs Spalding 5-3 In Game One

The Westminster Blue Jays (7-4, 4-1) took game one 5-3 against Spalding University (14-4, 2-1) Saturday afternoon in Louisville, Ky.
The Blue Jays were first on the board when Deion Hughes
singled in Matt Mallette
in the top of fourth.
It remained a 1-0 game until the bottom of the seventh when Spalding scored three runs on five hits, three of which were bunt singles.
The Blue Jays were able to answer in the top half of the eighth. Justin Whitaker
started the rally with a one-out single. Mallette
then walked, followed by a Tyler Branneky
single to load the bases. Whitaker
scored from third on a drop third strike, making the score 3-2 Spalding. Tim Chambliss
singled a 2-1 pitch up the middle scoring Mallette
, giving the Blue Jays a one run lead.
Westminster scored an insurance run in the top half of the ninth on a Mallette
RBI scoring Cam Backes
to end the game at 5-3.
The Blue Jays out-hit Spalding 11-9, led by Mallette
with 3 hits. Kevin Moritz
received the save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Tyler Ten Eyck
received the win, pitching eight innings and giving up three earned runs.
Westminster takes on Spalding in a doubleheader Saturday starting at 11:00 a.m.
