Baseball Slides By Fontbonne, Improves To 9-5 In SLIAC

The Westminster Blue Jays won both games of the doubleheader against Fontbonne University Tuesday afternoon.

In game one of the doubleheader, the Blue Jays got on the board first scoring three in the top of the first inning. Fontbonne took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third on a three run homerun. The Blue Jays then scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth, including a two run homerun by Tyler Branneky and a two RBI triple by Matt Mallette.  Fontbonne then scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-7.

Fontbonne scored one run in the sixth to give them a one run lead heading into the top of the last inning.
The Blue Jays rallied to score two runs in the top of the last inning, curtsey of Deion Hughes’ two RBI triple scoring Mallette and Danton Hughes.  This gave them a 9-8 lead.  Fontbonne went 1,2,3 in the bottom half of the inning to end the game.

Deion Hughes was the winning pitcher.  He pitched three innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out three.  Mallette led the Blue Jays offense with three hits and three RBIs.

In game two, the Blue Jays won 7-6.  Again, the Blue Jays had late inning heroics, this time by Tim Chambliss. Chambliss pinch hit with two outs in the top of the ninth with the go ahead run on second base.  After working the count full, Chambliss singled to the left side scoring Deion Hughes.  Chambliss RBI gave the Blue Jays a 7-6 lead, and was the eventual game winning RBI.

Kevin Moritz was the winning pitcher. He pitched two innings, allowing no runs on and no hits.  Tyler Branneky led the way for the Blue Jay offense with three hits and two RBIs.

The Blue Jays head to Greenville College for a three game series this Friday and Saturday.
