Blue Jays Can’t Hold Leads In Three Losses

Grinnell, Iowa - The Westminster College softball squad let early leads slip away in 3-of-4 games to finish 1-3 and fourth in the Pioneer Classic this past weekend at Grinnell College.

The Blue Jays (9-12) led Washington University 2-0 after five innings in Friday’s tournament opener, but Washington U. tied the game in the sixth and scored three runs in the seventh to win 5-2. Sophomore Lori Jones, who was named to the all-tournament team, recorded a hit. Fellow sophomores Becca Rose and Megan Kaysinger each recorded a hit while sophomore all-tournament team pick Brittany Lee (5-4) took the loss on the mound, allowing five runs on nine hits and five walks while recording 11 strike outs.

Westminster picked up its lone win Friday with a 7-2 victory over host Grinnell. Rose went 2-for-4 and drove in a run, Jones drove in two runs and hit her team-high sixth home run of the season, and sophomore Rai’an Harris drove in three runs. Sophomore Sarah Schneider (4-6) went the distance, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks while striking out nine batters.

In the third game of round-robin play Saturday morning, the Blue Jays led Nebraska Wesleyan University 5-3, but gave up three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jones went 4-for-4 with an RBI and Harris went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Lee (5-5) took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits, despite striking out eight batters.

Westminster met host Grinnell in the consolation contest and jumped out in front 5-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. Grinnell plated six runs and held on for the victory. Lee, sophomore Megan Kaysinger and freshman Emily Kesel each chipped in two hits. Junior Morgan Shipley added a pair of hits and drove in two runs, but it was not enough. Lee (5-6) took her third late inning loss in two days.
