Blue Jay Basketball Enjoys New Wave Of Success
Fulton, Mo. – Over the past three seasons, the Westminster College basketball teams have combined to win or share four St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) basketball titles. And, both teams are in the hunt to capture league honors this season and qualify for post-season play.
The Blue Jay men won or shared league titles in 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11. They qualified for the conference tournament each season and won the 2010 event to earn the school’s second-ever NCAA Division III tournament berth. This year’s squad (9-9, 5-4 SLIAC), which features 11 underclassmen, is playing into shape to make a conference tournament run.
During the 2010-11 season, the Westminster women made history by winning the school’s first-ever SLIAC league title. Now the team has set loftier goals of winning its first conference tournament title and advancing to its first-ever NCAA Division III national tournament. The Blue Jay squad (15-2, 9-0 SLIAC), which returned four starters from last year’s record-setting team, is currently riding a nine-game winning streak and has not lost a regular-season SLIAC contest since the 2009-10 season.
While the teams have shown success on the court, the women have made a mark in the classroom. Nine Blue Jay females made the Dean’s List this past fall semester and six players compiled a 4.0 grade point average.
