Blue Jays Split Season Opening Games

The Blue Jays opened their 2013 season off with a 5-1 victory over Elms College Monday afternoon in the first game of the double header.

The Blue Jays scored first in the top half of the second when sophomore second baseman Cam Backes (Tipton, Mo. /Tipton) singled in Justin Whitaker (Kossuth, Miss. /Kossuth).  They got another in the top half of the third when senior Matt Mallette (St. Louis, Mo. /St. Mary's) scored freshman Deion Hughes (Jefferson City, Mo. /Helias) on a fielders’ choice to give them a 2-0 lead. The Blazers scored in the bottom of the fourth to make it 2-1, but the Blue Jays scored two more runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to make the final score 5-1.

The Blue Jays tallied ten hits and Mallette led the way with two RBIs.  Senior pitcher Tyler Ten Eyck (DeWitt, Mich. /DeWitt) got the victory pitching five innings, and only gave up one unearned run.

Westminster fell 0-7 in game two of the double header.  Senior Kevin Moritz (Chesterfield, Mo. /DeSmet) was the losing pitcher, pitching four and two-thirds innings giving up three runs, two of them earned.
