Recipes from members of the Churchill family, America’s First Ladies, Missouri’s First Ladies, prominent Missouri women and great cooks from across the country and the British Isles are now available once more with the recent publication of the second edition of The Cookery Book at the National Churchill Museum on the campus of Westminster College in Fulton, MO. The first edition of the book, published in 1977, was coordinated by the St. Louis Friends of the Churchill Memorial and Library with the assistance of committee members from around the state. Friends from all over the United States and the British Empire donated the original 1,500 recipes tested and deemed fitting for the final volume.
“All cookbooks in England are called ‘cookery books,’ so the term was indeed a fitting choice for a salute to the National Churchill Museum and to Anglo-American relations,” says Dr. Rob Havers, Executive Director of the National Churchill Museum. “Many of the recipes were prepared for Sir Winston himself.”
This new second edition, which contains many new recipes, was made possible by the Mid-Missouri Friends of the National Churchill Museum and Westminster alumnus Brock Ayers and his family from St. Louis.
Recipes are arranged in 12 different categories with everything represented from hors d’oeuvres and meat dishes to desserts and sauces.
Recipe contributors include such notable people as Bess Truman, Mamie Eisenhower, Lady Bird Johnson Betty Ford, Lady Randolph Churchill, Baroness Spencer-Churchill, Barbara Eagleton, and Missouri First Ladies Geraldine Dalton and Carolyn Bond.
St. Louis contributors include Mrs. James S. McDonnell III, Howard Elliott, Mrs. Howard Elliott, Jr., Mrs. Sanford N. McDonnell, Mrs. William A. Sims, Jr. and Mrs. Ted C. Wetterau.
Contributors from Columbia and Jefferson City include Mrs. Sam B. Cook, Patricia Epple, Mrs. Robert C. Simonds and Mrs. Thomas A. Vetter.
The recipe sections are divided by line drawings of the Churchill Memorial and historical vignettes of the Memorial’s history. The volume also contains color photographs from the National Churchill Museum.
“The Cookery Book” can be purchased at the National Churchill Museum. The cost is $25. Volumes may also be ordered by mail by contacting the Museum at 573-592-5263.
