The Westminster Blue Jays took down Fontbonne University in their 73-55 win Wednesday night. The win advances the Blue Jays’ overall record to 13-5 and moves them into 3rd place in the SLIAC with a record of 6-3.
The Fontbonne Griffins took the quick lead, hitting a short jumper and a three pointer before the Blue Jays were able to hit a shot. Skylar Tolson
(Columbia, Mo. /Rock Bridge) hit a three pointer to put the Blue Jays’ first numbers on the board. The three pointer started a 12-0 run just three minutes into the game.
A foul by the Blue Jays gave the Griffins the chance to stop the run, but the Blue Jays came back with another 8-0 run (20-6).
The Blue Jays continued to increase the lead, and a jumper by Joe Prophet
(St. Louis, Mo. /Cardinal Ritter) put the Blue Jays up by 21 with 9:42 left in the first half.
The Blue Jays kept a healthy 20 point lead the rest of the half, and went into halftime up 44-23. Prophet
scored 18 points during the first half, going 8-13 from the field.
The Blue Jays came out and hit three layups to start the second half. The Blue Jays started an 8-2 run, so the Griffins called a timeout with 13:41 left in the game. Joe James
(Kirkwood, Mo. /Vianney) came out of the timeout and hit a three pointer to put the Blue Jays up by 34 points (63-29). The Blue Jays rotated in all 14 players. Fontbonne went on a 19-0 run over a seven minute span, but the Blue Jays held on and won 73-55.
The Blue Jays shot 52% from the field while holding the Griffins to shooting 33%. Westminster scored 24 points off Griffin turnovers. Prophet
