Head of America’s Largest New Home Builder Company to Speak at Westminster College Commencement 


Don Tomnitz, Westminster Commencement Speaker 2013The head of America’s largest new home builder company, Don Tomnitz, will be this year’s commencement speaker at Westminster College in Fulton, MO.

Tomnitz is Vice Chair, President and Chief Executive Officer of D.R. Horton, Inc., a family business that grew from a local Dallas/Fort Worth area company over three decades ago into the largest home builder in the United States, according to Builder magazine.

He is a member of the Class of 1970 at Westminster and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from the school.

“We are pleased to welcome Don and Sharon Tomnitz back to campus and I want to thank Don for agreeing to deliver this year’s commencement address,” says Westminster President Dr. George B. Forsythe. “His years of successful accomplishments in the business world offer volumes of advice and inspiration that he can give to our graduates.”

Westminster Commencement Exercises will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, in Champ Auditorium on campus.

As head of D.R. Horton, Tomnitz has been a guest on television shows such as CNBC’s “Squawk Box” and “Morning Call,” “Bloomberg News” and the “Neil Cavuto Show” on Fox.  He has been named one of the Best CEO’s in America by Institutional Investor magazine three times and has been included in the Associated Press CEO “Winners.”  In 2010, he was listed as one of the 50 Most Influential People in Real Estate as determined by Bloomberg Businessweek.

Tomnitz began with D.R. Horton in 1983 to initiate the land development function of the company.  For the next nine years he served as the Division President of various homebuilding operating markets until he became an integral member of the company management team during its Initial Public Offering process.  His knowledge of the industry, leadership experience and public speaking skills were invaluable in the presentations for investment bankers, analysts and potential shareholders.

In 1992 he was named Vice President of the Western Region, which included all operations west of the Mississippi.  Then in 1996 he became President of the Homebuilding Division and in January 1998 Executive Vice President. 

By November he became Vice Chair and Chief Executive Officer and then in 2000, he was named President.

Prior to joining D.R. Horton, Tomnitz was a U.S. Army Captain, a Vice President of Republic Bank of Dallas, N.A, and a Vice President of Crow Development Company, a Trammell Crow Company.

During his years at Westminster, he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity and a Distinguished Military Graduate from the ROTC program. He has been a recipient of the Westminster College Alumni Achievement Award and been awarded the Mexico Area Chamber of Commerce G. Andy Runge Ambassador Award.

He also holds a Master of Business Administration in finance from Western Illinois University where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi national scholastic society.

Tomnitz is married to Sharon K. Stevens, a 1971 graduate of William Woods University.
