Football Falls In Final Seconds To Hendrix

The Westminster Blue Jays fell to Hendrix College 44-46 after a back-and-forth battle that ended in the final seconds Saturday afternoon. This was Hendrix’s first football game since 1960. The Blue Jays are now 0-1 for their season.

The Blue Jays won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. They came out strong and started the game with a sack by junior Brett Carrigan for a nine yard loss. Senior Josh Bromberg intercepted the pass, and two plays later the Blue Jays scored the first touchdown of the day; senior Ronnie Seals Jr. had a two yard rush to score and sophomore Kevin Ludwig’s point after kick was good. The next two possessions for the Hendrix Warriors were lethal for the Blue Jays. They scored on both possessions, putting them up 14-7. The first quarter ended with the Blue Jays on the Hendrix 17 yard line.

Junior quarterback Joe Plassmeyer completed a 17 yard pass to freshman Mike Washington just 1:07 into the second quarter for a touchdown. The kick was good, tying the game up 14-14. The Blue Jays scored again on their next possession with a five yard rush from senior Sam Lantz Jr.; PAT was good, but the Warriors tied the game up within two minutes (21-21). Senior Justin Billiot owned the next Westminster possession, rushing for six yards and then rushing for 73 yards to score a touchdown, PAT was good by Ludwig. Carrigan forced a fumble on the Westminster 3 yard line with 19 seconds remaining in the half, and the Blue Jays recovered it. The Blue Jays headed into halftime up 28-21. 

The Blue Jays came out strong in the third quarter, and Seals Jr. scored, putting the Blue Jays up 35-21. The Warriors answered back with a field goal and a touchdown. The kick attempt was blocked by freshman Kyree Hart (35-30). Hendrix completed a pass with 2:49 left in the third to take the 36-35 lead.

The Warriors continued to rack up points, putting seven more up on the board to start the fourth quarter. Bromberg intercepted his second pass of the day, and returned it 39 yards to score a touchdown. The Blue Jays attempted for a two-point conversion, but was unable to complete the pass, leaving them down 41-43. Hendrix was unable to make it past their own 17 yard line before the Blue Jays took back over. The Blue Jays made it within field goal range and Ludwig scored a 28 yard field goal, finally taking the lead back (44-41). The Warriors were on Westminster’s 37 yard line with 1:18 left in the game. They made it to the two yard line, but with 0:01 left on the clock, the Warriors made the 25 yard field goal to win the game 46-44. 

The Blue Jays finished with 410 offensive yards, keeping the rushing (216) and passing (194) yards close to even.  Plassmeyer completed 17 passes. Seals Jr. led the Blue Jays with 100 net rushing yards, and Washington led in receiving yards with 50. Senior Louvis Johnson led the Blue Jays with 12 total tackles and .5 sacks. Carrigan finished with 10 tackles and 3.5 sacks.

The Blue Jays start their conference season next Saturday, September 14th as they host Crown College in their home-opener at 1:00 p.m. If you cannot make it to the game, watch it live here.
