Hap ArnoldThree prominent political scientists/military officers will come to Westminster College on Tuesday, Feb. 7, from 3-4:15 p.m. in the Coulter Lecture Hall to offer their diverse perspectives on American foreign policy, U.S. national security strategy and America’s international commitments today.

Titled “United States National Security Grand Strategy,” the panel of U.S. military speakers is a part of the General Hap Arnold Lecture Series of the United States Air Force Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama.

Their perspectives will include an assertive grand strategy, a liberal international grand strategy and a grand strategy of restraint.

The U.S. military only allows the speakers to travel to a few selected colleges and universities every year.  This year they will visit Rutgers, Washington State University, Georgetown University and Westminster College.

The presentation is free and open to the public and is sponsored by The Center for Engaging the World and The Churchill Institute.

An audience question and answer period will follow the formal presentations.

“Those interested in global affairs, U.S. foreign policy, American national politics, civil-military relations or transnational studies should not miss this event,” says Dr. Kurt Jefferson, Chair of Transnational and International Studies and The Churchill Institute.  “We hope the public will come help Westminster to welcome our guests from the United States military to campus.”

Inspired by the leadership and legacy of Sir Winston Churchill, The Churchill Institute creates programs and opportunities for students to develop into leaders in a global community, including the global and intellectual experiences, both academic and practical, that are offered by the Center of Engaging the World.

Founded in 1851, Westminster College is one of the top liberal arts colleges in the nation, according to the rankings of U.S.News & World Report.  Forbes magazine selected Westminster as one of America’s Top Colleges and Universities, the Best Liberal Arts College in Missouri, and one of the Best Liberal Arts Colleges in America.   The Princeton Review recently named the College as one of the best colleges and universities in the Midwest for the tenth straight year.  Newsweek-Kaplan named it “One of the 372 Most Interesting Schools in America” and Westminster has also been recognized as one of 240 Colleges of Distinction.  This selective college for men and women is situated on an 86-acre residential campus with small class sizes taught by an excellent faculty.  Westminster is a challenging academic environment where students are educated to lead and inspired to succeed.

Westminster College is internationally recognized for hosting major leaders such as Sir Winston Churchill who made his famous “Iron Curtain” speech at Westminster in 1946.  This one historic moment has led to a steady procession of world leaders bringing their messages to Westminster over the years, including four U.S. Presidents, Mikhail Gorbachev, Margaret Thatcher and Lech Walesa.  The Winston Churchill Memorial and Library in the United States on campus, the only museum in North America totally devoted to Churchill’s life and work, underwent a $4 million renovation in 2006 and is now a state-of-the-art interactive showcase, symbolizing Westminster’s educational mission to graduate the world’s future “leaders of character.”  Recently, this beautiful facility was given the designation The National Churchill Museum by the U.S. Congress.
