Westminster College’s new International Business Program will bring engaging new opportunities to International Business students when the College opens its campus in Mesa next month.

"What makes Westminster special is the way we bring liberal arts education into professional programs through ambitious, overarching projects," says Dr. Selcen Phelps, Director of the new International Business Program at Mesa. "On our Fulton campus, I have had Entrepreneurship and E-commerce students create radio shows discussing how to move from the materials economy in crisis into a global blue economy, and Management Information Systems thesis students develop augmented reality technologies to assist the disabled."

Dr. Phelps, an honored business professor, has been charged with building the International Business program at Westminster College’s new Mesa campus, recruiting students, and developing partnerships with local high schools, businesses, graduate schools and other organizations.

She has served as the Accounting, Business, Economics, and Management Information Systems (ABEMIS) Department Chair and the faculty advisor of GlobeFM (Westminster’s Internet radio station) at the Fulton campus as well as The Long Term Thinking Club on the Fulton campus.

Her research interests include multi-objective decision making, metaheuristics, pattern matching in communications and organizational behavior as influenced by technology and she has been published in flagship journals such as Management Science, Journal of the Operational Research Society and INFORMS Journal of Computing.

She has worked as a Management Science consultant, research consultant/statistician, interpreter, speechwriter and the lyricist/drama director of the first Turkish rock opera.

She will be chronicling the development of the Mesa International Business Program at her blog, http://biggeryears.wordpress.com/.

Dr. Phelps is an Associate Professor of Business and Management Information Systems and the William Gordon Buckner Endowed Chair in Business. She has a BA in Business Administration and an MS and a Ph.D. in Operations Research from Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey.

She spent one year at Carnegie Mellon University on a Turkish Council of Higher Education scholarship and six months at Purdue University as an exchange scholar. In 2001, she received a grant to represent young European scientists at the Latin American Association of OR Societies Summer School in Vinie del Mar, Chile.

During her eight years at the Fulton campus of Westminster, she has designed the MIS program and taught 16 difference courses in business, quantitative methods and MIS.

"The demographics of the Mesa-Phoenix area, as well as the growth of business and technology in the region, fits in very well with what we have to offer at Westminster," says Dr. Phelps. "We have laid the groundwork for a thriving new campus, and I am looking forward to the challenge of building our IB program here."
