Lady Blue Jays Down Wartburg In Game 2 of Home Opener

The Westminster Lady Blue Jays fell to the Wartburg Knights 0-1 during game one of their home opener. The Knights scored in the top of the first when their second batter stole home. The Knights had bases loaded with just one out in two innings (second and fourth) and bases loaded with two outs in the fifth and sixth innings, but the Blue Jays were able to hold them and end the innings with no extra runs. The Blue Jays held a scoring opportunity when senior Kenna Cornelson cracked a triple in the bottom of the sixth with just one out, but they were not able to bat her in.

K. Cornelson led the Blue Jays, going 2 for 2 from the plate, and juniors Brittany Lee and Rai’an Harris went 2 for 4 from the plate. Junior Sarah Schneider was credited with the loss for the game.

The Blue Jays turned the page for game two, winning 6-3. Junior Lori Jones put the first numbers on the board, scoring in the bottom of the first off a passed ball.  The next two innings were uneventful, but the Knights tied the game at 1 when the Knight’s catcher bunted in their centerfielder in the top of the fourth.

The Blue Jays’ bats caught fire in the bottom of the fourth and they answered back. The Blue Jays had five hits and scored five runs. K. Cornelson batted in freshman Shelby Cornelson to start the rally, followed by Jones batting in seniors Morgan Shipley and Talisha Washington.  K. Cornelson made it to third on Jones’ single and made it home on a passed ball to complete the fifth run of the inning.

The Knights scored one run in the top of the sixth to bring the score to 6-2, and scored again in the top of the seventh, trying to tie the game up. The Knights had bases loaded, but their fifth batter flied out to centerfield and the runner on third left early, giving them an automatic out and the Blue Jays’ the win.
 
Jones led the Blue Jays, going 1 for 3 from the plate, scoring twice and grabbing two RBIs. Freshman Shelby Meyer and Shipley went 2 for 3 from the plate. Lee was credited with the win, throwing seven strikeouts.

The Blue Jays hit the field again next Friday, March 22, in Hanover, Ind. when they take on Hanover College at 3:30 p.m.
