Lady Blue Jays Hit 16-2 Run to Overtake Griffins

A 16-2 run starting the second half brought the Lady Blue Jays another conference win Wednesday night against Fontbonne University (70-55). The Blue Jays are on a three game win streak, leading the SLIAC 8-1. Their overall record moves to 9-9.
The Fontbonne Lady Griffins take the early lead, going up 4-0 in the first minute of the game. The Blue Jays quickly came back, tying the game with 17:06 on the clock. The teams battled, and the lead changed multiple times.
A layup by
Kenna Cornelson (Oklahoma City, Okla. /Casady) from
Leigh Ann Lutz (California, Mo. /California) put the Blue Jays up by four (15-11) with 13:48 to go in the half. The Griffins kept battling and the game four more times.
A jumper by
Cornelson with 22 seconds left in the half gave the Blue Jays a two point advantage heading into halftime (28-26).
The Blue Jays came out of halftime and went on a ten point run. The Griffins interrupted by hitting an open layup three minutes in, but the Blue Jays came back with a six point run.
The Griffins called a timeout and stopped the Blue Jays’ momentum. The Blue Jays held a steady 17 point lead, and with 5:34 left in the game, the Blue Jays grabbed a 23 point lead, the largest lead of the game (67-44).
The Blue Jays won the game 70-55.
The Blue Jays outscored the Griffins 42-29 in the second half, scoring 57% while holding the Griffins to 28%.
All 12 Blue Jays saw the floor tonight. The Blue Jays scored 23 points off Griffins’ turnovers.
Lutz led the Blue Jays with 18 points, shooting 4-7 from beyond the arc.
Cornelson chipped in 14 points.
Talisha Washington (Fulton, Mo. /Fulton) and
Mackenzie Haddox (Washington, Mo. /St. Francis Borgia Regional) both dished in four assists, and
Haddox grabbed four steals.
Laci Luff (Pea Ridge, Ark. /Pea Ridge) pulled down eight rebounds.
The Blue Jays hit the road to Jacksonville, Illinois Saturday to take on MacMurray College at 1:00 p.m.
