Lady Blue Jays Split Games during Tip-Off Tournament

The Westminster Blue Jays hosted the Tip-Off Tournament for three teams over the weekend.
The Westminster women’s basketball team ended the tournament 1-1. The Blue Jays beat Hendrix College Friday night 83-49, and fell to Rhodes College Saturday evening 72-85.
Friday night the Blue Jays took a slow start against Hendrix College. They took the lead a minute into the game from a two pointer by Leigh Ann Lutz from Kenna Cornelson, and never lost it. No one scored until two minutes later when Hannah Kloster put up an easy two. The Blue Jays went on an 8-3 run, putting the Blue Jays up 17-7 halfway through the first. They let the Warriors come within 5 points with 5 minutes left in the half, but quickly took control of the game again, never letting the Warriors that close again. The Blue Jays went into half up 35-22.
A jumper by Mackenzie Haddox five minutes into the second half started the Blue Jays 8-0 run on the Warriors. The scoring went back and forth until Haddox started another run (9-0) with nine minutes left in the half, putting them up by 28 points. Kasey Gatson scored the last six points for the Blue Jays, while giving them the largest lead of the game, 36 points, with a minute left of play. The Blue Jays ended the game 83-49.
Lutz led the game with 20 points and with three assists. Kloster followed closely behind with 18 points. Six Blue Jays had assists, a team total of 15. The Blue Jays went 15 for 19 on free throws. Kloster led the Blue Jays with seven rebounds and Talisha Washington had six steals.
Saturday evening the Blue Jays took on the Rhodes College Lynx. The scoreboard went back and forth for the first seven minutes until Haddox put in a jumper from Kloster to start a Blue Jays 12-0 lead, putting them up 24-14. The Blue Jays took the highest lead 16 points after a good basket by Cornelson halfway through the first. The Lynx battled back, and tied the game with three minutes left in the half. They took the lead seconds later, and the Blue Jays went into halftime down 45-41.
A three pointer by Lutz put the Blue Jays down by only one point two minutes into the second half, but they could not get ahold of the lead. The Blue Jays made an attempt again to gain the lead, tying the game at 58 with 12 minutes left of play. The Lynx challenged back, and went on an 11-0 run to put the Blue Jays down. The Blue Jays tried to come back, but could not get within seven points. The Blue Jays tried fouling in the last minutes to gain control of the ball, but the Lynx went five for six on their free throws.
Lutz led the game with 19 points, followed by Kloster with 14. Cornelson had six assists and six rebounds. Washington and Danielle Williams also contributed six rebounds each.
The Blue Jays take a break for Thanksgiving, and return to play on November 29th at 5:30 p.m. when they head to Missouri S&T.
