Newman Civic Fellow Award
5/19/2011
Student News
Hannah Minchow-Proffitt, a junior at Westminster College from Kirkwood, MO, majoring in non-profit leadership, has been named one of 135 students from 30 states as a Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact.
The Newman Civic Fellows Awards recognize inspiring college students who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country.
Minchow-Profitt is committed to spreading awareness about human trafficking and sustainable giving. Through her involvement in the Rwanda Community Partnership Project (RCPP) and other social justice centered campus organizations, she has become passionate about the future of the micro-financing revolution taking place in the non-profit sector and hopes to expand the RCPP to include more micro-loan projects in Rwanda.
The human trafficking cause has also become a passion for Hannah, resulting in her planning and implementation of a community art auction to raise funds for Polaris Project, a leading anti-slavery organization.
“I want to congratulate Hannah on receiving this prestigious honor,” says Dr. George B. Forsythe, President of Westminster. “She represents the best of the best among American college students and is one of our many Westminster students who are leading the way in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country.”
Newman Civic Fellows make the most of their college experiences to better understand themselves, the root causes of social issues and effective mechanisms for creating lasting change. This is the first group of Newman Civic Fellows to ever be honored. Named for Dr. Frank Newman, a founder of Campus Compact who dedicated his life to creating systematic change through education, these Fellows are reflections and affirmations of his life’s work.
Campus Compact is a national coalition of more than 1,100 college and university presidents, representing nearly six million students, who are committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education to improve community life and to education students for civic and social responsibility. Through the Newman Civic Fellows Awards, college and university presidents acknowledge students with the ability and motivation to create lasting changes in our communities.
