Churchill Memorial
A two-day workshop for teachers, “Leadership & Lasting Legacy of Winston S. Churchill,” is being held June 27-28 at the Churchill Memorial and Library in the United States located on the Westminster College campus in Fulton, MO.
Nine educators from the Greater Kansas City area and the East St. Louis area in Illinois are participating.
The workshop is made possible by a grant from the Miller Nichols Charitable Foundation who donated money to further educate teachers in the Kansas City area on the work and mission of the Churchill Memorial.
Three sessions are being held and then participants will prepare a lesson/activity in pairs based on what they have learned. They can use the Memorial exhibit, curriculum, library and materials from the sessions to create their project.
The sessions are being facilitated by Dr. Rob Havers, Executive Director of the Churchill Memorial; Mandy Crump, Education Coordinator for the Memorial; and Linda Segebrecht, creator of the Memorial curriculum from Project Explore.
Sessions at the workshop include: “Digitized Cultural Resources and Your Classrooms,”Churchill’s Impact on American History; and “Churchill in the Classroom.” Meals will be served at local Fulton restaurants, Beks and Sir Winston’s. Participants will also have the opportunity to view Crane’s Store, the Auto-World Museum and the historic Fulton downtown.
The luncheon speaker will be Jason Smith, a North Callaway Social Studies teacher.
Participants will receive on hour of graduate credit in continuing education from the University of Missouri, Kansas City.
During the conference the teachers will learn about the new Memorial education curricula in detail both in terms of classroom application and more broadly concerning the study of 20th century world history and other aspects of Churchill’s life and legacy based on the Missouri standards from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

The Winston Churchill Memorial and Library in the United States is located on the campus of Westminster College in Fulton, MO, the site of Churchill’s famous “Iron Curtain” speech. The Memorial was founded in 1969 to honor the life and legacy of one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century. It is housed within the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Aldermanbury, a 12th century church from the middle of London, redesigned by Sir Christopher Wren in 1677 and relocated to Fulton in 1969. The Undercroft of this beautiful and historic Wren church is a museum filled with a priceless treasury of artifacts and information relating to the life and times of Sir Winston Churchill.
The Churchill Memorial is open from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. daily. Admission is Adults: $6.00; Senior Citizens, AAA and AARP members: $5.00; Youth (12-18): $4.00; College Students: $4.00; Children (6-11): $3.00; and Children (5 and under): free.
