Volleyball Grabs Two Wins On Day Two of Invitational

Athletic News - Volleyball

The Westminster Volleyball team came out strong on day two at the Augustana Invitational and grabbed their first two season wins. The Blue Jays leave with a 2-2 overall record.

The Blue Jays quickly took the first set with a 25-13 score over Augustana. The Vikings of Augustana pressured the Blue Jays in set two, but they were able to hold onto the lead, winning 25-22 and taking the 2-0 lead. Westminster was not able to complete the 3-0 win as the Vikings took the third set 25-18. Unlike day one of the tournament, the Blue Jays used this as fuel to bring home their first season win. They shut down the Vikings and took the easy 25-12 set four win. “We were in control of the matches. We caught Augustana at the right time and played great against them,” said Coach Madson.

Sophomore Lexi Collier (Weston, Mo. /West Platte) led the Blue Jays with a 53.3 kill percentage, with 8 kills and no errors.  Freshman Kayla Reeg (St. Louis, Mo. /Oakville) dished 25 assists, and sophomore Caroline Will (St. Louis, Mo. /Rosati-Kain) dug 18 balls for the Blue Jays. Freshman Amanda Kiso (Jefferson City, Mo. /Blair Oaks) finished with two solo blocks and five block assists.

The Blue Jays then went on to defeat Ripon 3-1. The Blue Jays took the first set, but Ripon challenged them in the second set and won it. The Blue Jays once again used it as fuel to grab their second season win. They finished the match in four sets, easily taking the last two sets (25-17, 27-29, 25-12, 25-14).

“I think after the large upset over Augustana, the girls gained the confidence to push through in sets three and four to win. Our team had a great day together,” said Coach Madson.

Freshman Riley Lawrence (St. Louis, Mo. /Villa Duchesne) and Collier led the team with 21 and 20 kills, respectively. Collier finished with a 43.9 kill percentage and Lawrence finished with a 38.6 kill percentage. Reeg dished 56 assists and Will dug 17 balls. Lawrence, Kiso and Collier all finished with three block assists each.

Collier was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Blue Jays will have their home-opener on September 11th at 7:00 p.m. as they host Illinois College.
