WC Softball Still In Contention for Tourney Berth

Greenville, Ill. - The Westminster College softball squad split a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with Spalding University Sunday at Greenville College to remain in contention for the fourth and final berth in the conference tournament. The Blue Jays (14-18, 8-8 SLIAC) lost the first game 6-1, but scored in the bottom of the seventh to take the nightcap 1-0.
Westminster got hits from junior Morgan Shipley, sophomore Rai’an Harris and junior Kenna Cornelson in dropping Sunday’s opener 6-1. Sophomore Brittany Lee (7-9) took the loss. In the nightcap, sophomore Talisha Washington reached on an error to lead off the home portion of the seventh inning of a scoreless game. Sophomore Lori Jones singled and Lee recorded a hit to drive home Washington with the winning run. Sophomore Sarah Schneider (7-8) got the win, allowing two hits in the complete game shut out.
Tournament Notes: Defending tournament champion Fontbonne University (24-10, 13-1 SLIAC) and Webster University (17-20, 11-4 SLIAC) have secured the top two seeds for next weekend’s conference tournament…Greenville (14-21, 8-6 SLIAC) has qualified, leaving a spot up for grabs between Blackburn College (17-19, 7-5 SLIAC) and Westminster (14-18, 8-8 SLIAC)…Blackburn has two doubleheaders remaining to be played, one with Greenville at home Monday and one at Fontbonne Tuesday…Spalding is not eligible as it completes its NCAA membership probation…The tournament is scheduled for May 3-5 at ABC park in St. Ann.
