Westminster Blue Jay Runners Place At NCAA Regionals

Fulton, Mo. - Three Westminster College female cross country runners and the men’s team placed at the NCAA Division III Midwest Cross Country Championships this past Saturday in Rock Island, Illinois.

Sophomore Sarah Koestner (Lohman, Mo./Russellville) placed 62nd individually, finishing the 6K course in 23:44.1. Junior Kaily Downey (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) finished 97th in 24:24.4, and freshman Anna West (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) finished 175th in 25:56.6 in the 264-runner field. The Blue Jay women did not score as a team because of a shortage of runners.

The Westminster men’s squad placed 32nd in the 39-team field, marking the first time a Blue Jay squad has placed in NCAA regional competition.  Sophomore Matt Borst (Flower Mound, Tex./Marcus) placed 147th individually in the 277-runner field, covering the 8K distance in 28:01.5. Four other Blue Jays figured in the team scoring: including freshman Jared Patterson (Salem, Mo./Salem), 190th, 28:47.5; freshman Daniel Lindeman (Columbia, Mo./Hickman), 198th, 29:01.1; freshman Will Megl (Troy, Mo./Elsberry), 203rd, 29:12.7; and freshman Matt Merchant (Chicago, Ill./Mt. Carmel), 206th, 29:20.8.
