Fulton, Mo. – Senior Kurt Kovach (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt South) scored a season-high 25 points on Senior Night to lift the Westminster College men’s basketball squad to a 76-74 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Eureka College Saturday. With the win the Blue Jays (15-10, 11-5 SLIAC) secure a spot in next week’s conference tournament, but the location and seeds will not be determined until the completion of Monday and Tuesday’s games.
Eureka (15-9, 11-4 SLIAC) led at intermission 35-32, however the Blue Jays rallied in the second half and held on down the stretch to withstand a game-tying or game winning possession by the visitors. Sophomore Joe James (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) went 9-for-9 at the charity stripe to finish with 19 points and freshman Verdis Lee (Fulton, Mo./Fulton) added 16 points. Mark Lessen tallied 20 points and eight rebounds for Eureka.
Senior Kelsey Weymuth (Cole Camp, Mo./Cole Camp) finished with four points and nine rebounds, senior Mark Wright (Ellisville, Mo./Parkway South) scored six points and senior Dan Hohenstein (Fenton, Mo./Lutheran South) scored two points in their final home appearances.
