World War II Film to be Screened at Churchill Memorial  6/19/2008
Churchill Memorial

A film screening of The History Channel documentary “10 Days to D-Day” will be held from 6:30 p.m.-8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24, in the World War II Room of the Undercroft of the Churchill Memorial and Library in the United States located on the campus of Westminster College in Fulton, MO.

With the showing of an admission receipt from that day’s visit, patrons can see the documentary for free.  Regular admission price will be $6 and $3.

The film follows the lives of ten individuals from both sides of the battle in the days before the D-Day invasion.  That crucial time is reviewed through the eyes and personal thoughts of actual participants such as a German soldier, French resistance fighter and Canadian infantry man. The personal letters, diaries and, in some cases, interviews of these ten people provide a moving account of these tense days leading up to this monumental event in world history.

The roles of three key commanders, Sir Winston Churchill, General Dwight Eisenhower and General Erwin Rommel, are also examined.  Their decisions and emotions decided the fate of the men they commanded and the path their respective countries would take.  Profiles of these leaders provide insight into three of the superpowers locked into this worldwide conflict.

Pivotal scenes are reconstructed and archival footage sets the scene.

The film is based on the novel Spies Beneath Berlin by David Stafford.

The Winston Churchill Memorial and Library in the United States is located on the campus of Westminster College in Fulton, MO, the site of Churchill’s famous “Iron Curtain” speech.  The Memorial was founded in 1969 to honor the life and legacy of one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century.  It is housed within the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Aldermanbury, a 12th century church from the middle of London, redesigned by Sir Christopher Wren in 1677 and relocated to Fulton in 1969.  The Undercroft of this beautiful and historic Wren church is a museum filled with a priceless treasury of artifacts and information relating to the life and times of Sir Winston Churchill.
