Area Students Invited to Writers’ Workshop with Award-Winning Novelist and Professor Dr. Debra Brenegan, Hosted by Westminster College
Area college-bound students aspiring to a writing career will receive tips and insight from award-winning novelist and Westminster College professor Dr. Debra Brenegan at a writers’ workshop, Thursday, March 7, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at One Oh One, 101 West Main Street in Mesa, Az. Westminster College at Mesa will host the event, which is available at no charge. Parents are invited to attend with their students.
The Westminster College writers’ workshop is scheduled in conjunction with Mesa’s Discover U Weekend, organized by the City of Mesa, Westminster College and other higher education partners. Discover U weekend is an opportunity for students to engage with Mesa’s new and established education institutions in one place, plus experience some of Mesa’s signature events and attractions.
Brenegan’s workshop will kick off Discover U weekend.
Her novel Shame the Devil (SUNY Press, 2011) was a finalist for Foreword Review’s 2011 Book of the Year Award in the Historical Fiction category. Through her fiction, she received a Ragdale residency and the Ellen Hunnicutt Fiction Award and was a finalist for the John Gardner Memorial Fiction Prize, The Cincinnati Review’s Schiff Prose Prize, and the Crab Creek Review Fiction Prize. Her work has recently appeared or is forthcoming in Calyx, Tampa Review, Natural Bridge, The Laurel Review, RE:AL, The Southern Women’s Review, The Cimarron Review, Milwaukee Magazine, Phoebe, and other publications.
Brenegan is an Associate Professor and Chair of the English Department at Westminster College. She is also the coordinator of the Women’s Studies minor and the faculty sponsor of Janus, the campus literary magazine.
She received her Ph.D., English/Creative Writing (fiction) and Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies and an M.A. in English/Creative Writing (fiction) from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She received her B.A. in Journalism with distinction (Print Journalism and Broadcast Journalism) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Before pursuing her graduate degrees, Dr. Brenegan worked as a full-time and freelance journalist/professional writer and as a community college instructor.
Brenegan has a second novel and a short story collection circulating among agents and publishers. She is currently working on a third novel and a second short story collection.
Classes at the new Westminster campus in Mesa will begin in the fall of 2013. The campus, known as The Mesa Center for Higher Education, is a 53,000 square foot facility, formerly occupied by the Mesa City Court building, located in the heart of downtown Mesa at 245 West 2nd Street. Westminster will share the space, currently under renovation, with Wilkes University.
