Westminster Turns Principia Over In SLIAC Win

Westminster BasketballFulton, Mo. - One day after downing William Woods University 52-40 across town, the Westminster College women's basketball squad returned home Tuesday and extended its current winning streak to nine games with a 59-38 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Principia College. With the win, the Blue Jays (15-2, 9-0 SLIAC) extended their current SLIAC regular-season winning streak to 30 games dating back to the 2009-10 season.

Westminster took a few minutes to get settled against Principia (3-13, 2-7 SLIAC), but when sophomore Leigh Ann Lutz (California, Mo./California) hit a 3-pointer to break a 6-6 tie, the Blue Jays were off and running. Westminster forced 28 first-half turnovers and led 29-12 at intermission. The Blue Jays forced 39 turnovers in the game and senior Heather Letourneau (Smith, Mo./Smithton) broke her own school record with nine steals.

Senior Rachel Backes (Tipton, Mo./Tipton) and junior Hannah Kloster (Springfield, Mo./Parkview) paced the offense with 11 points each. Senior Liz Klaffenbach (Battle Ground, Wash./Prairie) finished with nine points and six rebounds, and junior Kenna Cornelson (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) added five points and seven steals. Lindsey Sydness scored a game-high 18 points for Principia.
