Westminster BasketballFulton, Mo. - Kerstin Hayes converted a traditional three-point play with 2.6 seconds remaining to lift Spalding University to a 71-68 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) victory over the Westminster College women Saturday. It was the first SLIAC regular-season loss for the Blue Jays since the 2009-10 season and snapped Westminster's 30-game SLIAC regular-season winning streak.

Westminster (15-3, 9-1 SLIAC) and Spalding (10-9, 6-6 SLIAC) went back and forth in the first half before the Blue Jays took a 32-31 lead into the locker-room. The second half was similar with neither team leading by more than five points. With 8.3 seconds left in regulation, Spalding held a 68-65 lead. Blue Jay senior Liz Klaffenbach grabbed an offensive rebound and converted a three-point play to knot the score. But, Hayes converted in the closing seconds and Westminster could not get off a desperation shot.

Senior Heather Letourneau (Smithton, Mo./Smithton) scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds to pace the Blue Jays. Klaffenbach (Battle Ground, Wash./Prairie) finished with 15 points and five rebounds, sophomore Leigh Ann Lutz (California, Mo./California) added 12 points, and junior Kenna Cornelson (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) finished with 11 points. Jessica Guy led Spalding with 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Hayes finished with 15 points and the game-winning points.
