Page Content: College officials have been notified that G.I. Jobs magazine has selected Westminster College as one of the 1,000 American Military Friendly Schools.

“We want to thank G.I. Jobs magazine for picking Westminster for this prestigious national honor,” says Westminster President Dr. George B. Forsythe. “We will work to live up to the accolade, constantly improving our campus environment to recruit and retain military personnel and veterans.”

The assessment was made after years of research, surveys and data into the quality of education, value, policies and student attractiveness of the 7,000 colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide. Surveys questions and weightings were determined by a national panel of five higher education administrators who administered the surveys.

“The Military Friendly Schools list is the gold standard in letting veterans know which schools offer them the greatest opportunity, flexibility and overall experience,” says Derek Blumke, President of Student Veterans of America and a member of the list’s Academic Advisory Board. “It’s especially important with so many schools competing for military students.”

Only 15 percent of higher education institutions were selected for the designation. Criteria for making the list included efforts to recruit and retain military and veteran students, resulting in recruiting military and veteran students and academic accreditations.

The 2011 Guide to Military Friendly Schools to be published in September will give the eight million military members and veterans seeking the right school for them a list of schools that meet their needs and values their military experience.

“Veterans need a trusted friend to help them decide where to get educated,” says Rich McCormack, G.I Jobs publisher. “The Military Friendly Schools list is that trusted friend.”

The Post 9-11 GI Bill and My CAA program have made higher educational opportunities attractive to veterans and military members.

“This list is especially important now because the Post-9/11 GI Bill has given veterans virtually unlimited financial means to go to school,” says McCormick. “Veterans can now enroll in any school, provided they’re academically qualified.”

Schools on the Military Friendly list also offer additional benefits to student veterans such as on-campus veteran programs, credit for service and military spouse programs.

The newly redesigned website, found at www.militaryfriendlyschools.com, features interactive tools and search functions to assist military students in choosing schools that best meet their personal education needs. The site currently shows 2010 Military Friendly Schools but will switch to the 2011 list in late September.
