On the Campaign Trail
Parades & Speeches
Senior Emily Herzog (right) hit the campaign trail this summer while interning with a Westminster alumnus.
Taking Advantage of Opportunities
Westminster has blessed me with lots of wonderful opportunities. I interned in the State Capitol not far from Westminster for the Lt. Governor’s Office my sophomore year. I studied in Washington, DC for a semester through the Washington Semester Program, and interned for U.S. Congresswoman JoAnn Emerson. I also studied abroad in England.
However, most recently, I interned for a political campaign. My internship had unique Westminster ties. Mike Gibbons, an’81 alum and now the father of a current Westminster student, is running for Missouri Attorney General. Senator Gibbons, like the other alums I have been around, takes pride in his Westminster education and jumped on the opportunity to help a student experience politics at a whole new level. I began interning for the Missourians for Gibbons campaign in June.
The Ins & Outs of Campaigning
Through the course of the summer, I was exposed to all of the different aspects of a campaign. Sometimes the tasks of an intern are simple like answering the phone or stuffing envelopes. I learned that the simple tasks matter as well.
What is neat about an internship is that you get the opportunity to try a little of everything. I was able to help write letters, attend events, fundraisers, and lots of parades on the behalf of the campaign. I also made contacts throughout the state - meeting lots of interesting people and working on grass roots efforts, signs and scheduling for the Gibbons campaign. At the State Fair and other events, I got to watch Mike speak to people about their cares and concerns. I learned how important individuals and constituents are to a campaign and candidate.
The Value of a Westminster Education
It has been an honor and inspiration to be a part of a campaign for such a successful Westminster alum. I have learned a great deal about team work from my co-workers and our campaign manager and being an honest leader from Mike. Mike is a wonderful representation of a successful alum and an all around great guy we can be proud of. Interning has taught me skills that I will carry with me to lead to a successful career when I graduate. All of the activities I have been involved with at Westminster from Student Ambassadors to interning have prepared me for a bright future to follow in the path of my Westminster family!
