Campus Mediation Program
What is Mediation?

Mediation is a creative and non-violent process for resolving conflicts in which an impartial person helps the parties to discuss the problem and devise their own solution. It does not focus on who is to blame, but on how to reach a mutually satisfying agreement.

Mediation is not legal representation, personal counseling, a replacement for the judicial system, or a court to determine blame or innocence. Mediation is identifying issues, communicating, brainstorming solutions, and coming to mutual agreements.

How Can the Campus Mediation Program Help?

When you contact us, we will listen to your problem. If we can help, we will contact everyone involved to ask them to participate in a mediation session. The process is voluntary, so both sides must be willing to participate.

Depending upon the nature of the conflict, our mediator or mediators may meet individually with both sides to hear their viewpoints. Then we will schedule a mediation session at a time convenient to everyone.

At the session, one or two neutral mediators will listen to all of the issues involved in the conflict. They will not decide who is right or wrong, but will facilitate a problem solving process in which the parties will reach their own agreement.

If the parties reach an agreement, it is formalized and put into written form to be signed by all those involved. We will then provide a follow-up on agreements and offer any further assistance.

What Kind of Conflicts Benefit from Mediation?

Some problems usually do not benefit from mediation, including?
When one or both sides are not willing to listen
