New Member Education
The New Member Experience
The New Member period begins after an invitation to join a sorority, also known as a Bid, has been extended by a chapter and accepted by the PNM. Being a New Member of a sorority is a significant time of orientation into a Greek chapter.
Through educational and chapter meetings facilitated by the sorority's active members, new members learn about the heritage and values of the organization. New Members learn about the history of their sorority, socialize with active members, and assist in the planning of activities. In addition, they participate in scholarship programs which compliment their class schedules and promote academic achievement. New Members are encouraged to lead balanced lives through involvement in chapter programs as well as campus activities.
Hazing Statement
Panhellenic enforces the National Panhellenic Conference's statement regarding hazing and pre-initiation activities, which offers guidelines to prevent hazing incidents on campus. Any violations of these guidelines are considered a hazing incident and in violation of the Panhellenic Council's regulations.
The following actions are prohibited: "Panhellenic defines hazing as any action taken or situation created intentionally, whether on or off fraternity premises, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment or ridicule. Such activities and situations include the creation of excessive fatigue; physical and psychological shocks; wearing apparel publicily which is conspicious and not normally in good taste; engaging in public stunts and jokes; morally degrading or humiliating games and activities; late night sessions which interfere with scholastic activities; and any other activities which are not consistent with the regulations and policies of the membership of this NPC position on hazing and other publications."
